No Surprise at All
Ever see two people together and just KNOW they’re going to end up staying that way forever? Maybe they’re dating, maybe they’re not, but you get this vibe about them.
It doesn’t happen a ton, but it’s out there.
Maybe because when people mesh, it’s obvious.
That’s the way my husband and I were. We started as friends. Adamantly refused to admit to anything more than friendship for weeks. And then, we were more than friends. Dating.
We dated for over three years before we got engaged. When we called our families to tell them the good news, they said, “Um, yeah. And?” It wasn’t a surprise to them. Because we’d been obvious in our intent even if we hadn’t realized it yet.
Needless to say, it was a bit of a letdown when we made our announcement because very few were actually surprised, and that’s part of the fun. But, it’s worked out well anyway. Because we’ve been married almost nineteen years now. And “more than friends” for twenty-two. 😉
In my latest novella, my characters Mack and Kaitlyn aren’t quite so obvious in their relationship. In fact, they start out completely at odds. Mack runs the local grocery store. Kaitlyn is the one who brought in that “newfangled” app Grocerease, which allows customers to have someone else do their shopping. And Mack isn’t okay with this.
Several of their interactions through the story include them snapping at each other, struggling with the way the other one just doesn’t understand.
But as they get to know each other more, and spend more time together, it becomes pretty obvious to some of the other characters (like Kailyn’s mom and Mack’s co-worker) that there’s something pretty exciting underneath.
And near the end, Candie, Mack’s co-worker teases him as he mans the register. “You’ve been checking her out for months. About time you do something about it!”
I love stories where the characters might not see that they’re meant to be, but everyone else can. It makes it fun to root for them and see what it takes to open their eyes.
Question for Readers: What about you? Was your relationship with a spouse, significant other or friend no surprise at all to those around you? Do you love relationships that are only a surprise to the characters involved?
About Amy: Amy R Anguish grew up a preacher’s kid, and in spite of having lived in seven different states that are all south of the Mason Dixon line, she is not a football fan. Currently, she resides in Tennessee with her husband, daughter, and son, and usually a bossy cat or two. Amy has an English degree from Freed-Hardeman University that she intends to use to glorify God, and she wants her stories to show that while Christians face real struggles, it can still work out for good. About the collection – Love Delivered:
You can have anything delivered—even romance.
Romance at Register Five (by Amy R Anguish)—Mack McDonald isn’t happy about the Grocerease app coming to his grocery store. But he’s committed to the sixty-day trial period, and braces himself to lose money. Kaitlyn Daniels loves how the Grocerease app helps her make ends meet so she can assist her mom, the reason she moved to small Sassafras, AR. Mack and Kaitlyn struggle to overcome differing opinions on the perks of the app. But if they don’t, it could keep them from something even better.
Where Love is Planted (by Sarah Anne Crouch)—Ivy Aaronson is surrounded by family at their flower shop in West Texas—just the way she likes it. But she’s given up hope on ever finding a man who understands her choices. When attorney Grant Keller orders flowers for his mother, Ivy wonders if maybe there are indeed some considerate men left in the world…until she finds out Grant’s relationship with his parents is less than ideal. How can Ivy ever find love when every man she meets puts career over family?
Sweet Delivery (by Heather Greer)— After winning Cake That!, Will Forrester thinks his Pastry Perfect baking dreams have come true. The sweetness fades when a chain bakery moves to town, and Will must adjust his plans to keep his customers. Hiring Erica Gerard is one of those changes. As they work together, Erica challenges Will and offers new ideas to improve the bakery. Soon, Erica and Will start bringing out the best in each other. But Erica harbors a secret, and if it’s discovered, Will might never be the same.
The Mermaids, the Ex and USSS (by Rachel Herod)— Braig Sanborn is the most loyal employee the United States Shipping Service has ever seen, which is why he agreed to transfer across the country with only a few weeks’ notice. Ella Morrison is so busy planning a friend’s wedding, she didn’t expect to fall for the carrier who delivers packages to her house. When they both find themselves in too deep, will they agree the relationship was doomed from the start?

Glad to have you here, Amy. When my future husband and I started dating, I think we shocked everyone. I was a good girl and he was a wild child. But I reformed him. He’s a preacher now. That surprise everybody even more 🙂 I love book relationships where characters are taken by surprise.

I love the surprise. I met Mack on a blind date and now we’ve been inseparable for 35 years—still surprising one another! 🥳

Yes, I like relationships in a book that are only a surprise to the characters involved.

Aren’t they fun? Thanks so much for commenting.

“Who was surprised by the relationship?” Me!! When I wasn’t looking, Love found me. We will be married 39 years in May. What a wonderful man he is. What drew me was watching how he treated others. So giving and considerate.
These stories sound fun! I imagine having a personal shopper would exclude impulse buys! In “Sweet Delivery”, a chain bakery couldn’t compete with the sweet aroma of a cozy sit-down hometown bakery. Hope I win; these sound great! And… new authors for me. Kathleen ~ Lane Hill House

I love stories with romance that is unexpected. When I was first dating my hubby everyone was sure he was perfect for me but I wasn’t sure so I prayed about it until I had peace about it and now we have been married for 22 years.
Amy Anguish says
Sounds like your prayers worked! 😀

I met my now husband when we both joined the same bowling league. Although we had both lived in the same area for quite some time, and he had a good bit of family in the area we had no connections that we knew of. He was pretty intentional about getting to know me, so I don’t think people were surprised when we got engaged!
Amy Anguish says
Sometimes it’s better when it’s not a surprise! 😉
