Shannon here: I first met Angela Breidenbach when she won 1st place in a writing contest and I won 2nd place. Three years later, she stood behind me in the Starbucks at an ACFW Conference. I’d just come out of a class where I heard the advice: Say memorable things to get readers to remember you. I introduced myself to Angie and said something stupid like, “I don’t like you. You beat me in the Touched By Love contest.” I was quick to assure her I was kidding and told her about the advice I’d gotten from my class. She laughed it off and was a good sport. The next time, I heard her name, she was doing a review on one of my books. Luckily she didn’t hold my bad attempt at humor against me.
Today, she shares her recipe for Sage Turkey, plus a glimpse into her real life romance. Every time you comment on any post dated Nov 21 – 25, your name goes in two drawings for a copy of her E-cookbook, Creative Cooking for Simple Elegance and my latest release, Rodeo Dust. Deadline Nov 26th, 11:59 pm central time. Happy Thanksgiving and here’s Angie:
Sage Turkey
Awesome for Christmas and Thanksgiving, but a nice dinner and then all left overs any time of year. Freeze some for easy additions to recipes later like the Mexican Lasagna, Simple Scratch Turkey Soup, and hot turkey sandwiches.
Turkey Bag (crucial)
One thawed turkey, rinse, and pat dry
Olive oil
Rub olive oil inside cavities and under the skin.
(Make sure you’ve removed giblets, etc.)
Mix all these dry ingredients in a small bowl.
2 Tablespoons of Garlic Powder
2 Tablespoons of Garlic Salt
1 Tablespoon of Cracked Black Pepper
½ cup rubbed sage, yes it’s really ½ a cup.
Rub the dry spice mix inside all cavities of the turkey. Then continue rubbing under the skin as far as you can possibly reach to get to the entire white meat. Rub all over the entire outside of the bird.
Following the turkey bag’s box directions, put 1 Tbs. flour in bag, shake. Now put the bird inside. Cut 3-4 slits in the top of the closed bag and then bake for the allotted amount of time, around 2-3 hours depending on the size of the turkey. It’s a flavorful bird. 🙂
Insider Tips: By removing jewelry, you won’t tear the turkey skin when oiling and spicing. A second person to hold open turkey bag is a nice benefit. Save drippings for Scratch Chicken Soup. Freeze all the juices; skim fat before using as soup stock.
Interview:
- What simple gesture does my hubby do that melts me every time?
He’s a big man. I have a small back. When he puts his hand across my back it nearly covers me. The warmth and peace of his hand on my back immediately melts me. If I’m stressed out, I settle down much more quickly with the touch of his hand.
- What simple gesture does my hubby say I do that melts him every time?
So I asked him…Mike says he loves the way I scratch his back.
We laughed then because evidently our backs carry our relationship.
- Who is more romantic?
My husband’s love language is gifts. So he’ll come up with surprises I don’t expect. But he’s also a deep thinker. He combines small gifts with well thought out romantic dinners that he makes for me. They’ll include lobster and chocolate, lol. I think he wins the romance card because of the care he takes in acting out the essence of romance.
- What is the most romantic present you ever bought your spouse?
I thought it was the belly dancing lessons I took for his groom’s gift. He wasn’t so impressed, lol. So I asked him for you…Mike says the special Superbowl weekend I gave him. I rented a room with a hot tub and big screen TV. You never saw a happier fellow!
- Where did we go for our honeymoon?
We took a Caribbean cruise out of Puerto Rico. It was wonderful. The highlight was when we won the Newlywed Game on board ship. We beat 25 and 50 year married couples. Then we stayed penpals with the 50th anniversary couple for many years. We still correspond with the widow for Christmas cards. They gave us some amazing advice and surprised us with their creativity in keeping the romance alive. We took their advice to heart and try hard to remember what their love looked like. It was full of humor!

Thank you 🙂 I reread the interview and smiled. It’s a good reminder of why I love my hubby 🙂

I don’t cook, yet I have a cookbook collection. I read them like novels from front to back. There are some other weird things I do, too.

My goal is to always bring a vegetable and dessert and let someone else do all the complicated stuff for Thanksgiving. So far, I’ve achieved.
