Crown On a Hill by Angela Breidenbach:
In a seaside village of the West Highlands in Scotland, a crown tops a hill over Oban. Once intended to sing the praises of the McCaig family, the granite tower hovers, never finished. Instead of a museum memorializing a few people, the unfinished shell forms a circular diadem nearly three-stories high. The windows, almost a hundred, are arched in two offset rows and create a glorious panoramic feast for the eyes. But the most incredible view is toward the front, out over the bay, to the islands beyond unhindered by any glass. At night, the crown-topped hill is lit up casting a romantic elegance over the entire village. But during the day, the gardens enclosed are enchanting. The perfect place for a romantic wedding!
I visited at the very end of November, climbing the steep road on a chilly day. The grass still so green, a few flowers grasped at life unwilling to give way to winter while red berries bowed low as misty rain turned to a downpour. Yet, I grew more amazed the closer I walked until I stood speechless inside the gorgeous, giant crown.
At the very center, where a bride and groom might say their vows, the acoustics are phenomenal. No sound system needed. As I spoke to my husband, I realized my voice could be heard anywhere in the coliseum. So, I sang. I sang Loch Lomond. The first song that came to my mind. My hubby pulled out his phone and recorded it. I didn’t realize it. I was just having fun. I realized at that moment how beautiful it would be to hear bridal vows from just that spot. How lovely a summer garden in bloom would look. How memorable to start a life together within the circlet of the crown resting on the hill over Oban.
I imagined a summer bride gracefully walking the circular path, passing arched windows framing her against the bluest of skies. She turns where the paths crisscross, and pauses a moment gazing into the raised center where her love waits to claim his bride. A celtic band plays as a breeze wafts through the intimate arena stirring her skirts.
I’d keep decorations to the minimum to let the setting shine. Maybe a few ribbons and petal strewn aisle. I’d let simplicity create the elegance. The bride would wear a tea-length dress and ballet slippers, absolutely have her tartan sash, and carry purple heather while the groom would ear his kilt.
