Shannon here: Romantic suspense author, Cathy Bryant shares insight into her characters’ romance from her latest release, A Bridge Unbroken. Comment on any post dated May 12 – 16 to enter the drawing. Print for US or digital for international. Deadline: May 24th, 11:59 pm central time. Here’s Cathy:
1. What’s the most romantic thing your hero ever did for your heroine?
In A Bridge Unbroken (the recently-released Miller’s Creek Novel), Chance arranges for a private room at a lakeside restaurant, complete with a crackling fire in a nearby stone fireplace, a seat overlooking the sunset on the liquid gold water of the lake, and the flickering flames of candlelight. He does all this for Dakota–right before he turns her in to the police. (I’m not saying anything more. You’ll have to read the book!)
2. What’s the most romantic thing your heroine ever did for your hero?
Dakota does three things that at first glance might not seem romantic, but with her past history, they’re very significant and reveal the depth of her love for Chance. First, she forgives him for the scars he left on her heart and for his tendency to place all the blame on her. Secondly, she stays put this time around, though she’d love to run away like she usually does. Last of all, she’s willing to sacrifice the only home she’s truly ever known because she thinks it’s what is best for him.
3. Do your hero and heroine have a favorite song?
Yes! Even though the Miller’s Creek Novels are all set in Texas, Chance and Dakota’s favorite song is Sweet Home Alabama. They love to two-step to the song, and do so twice in the story. The song became their favorite when they were high school sweethearts.
4. How soon after meeting the hero did the heroine know he was the one?
Chance and Dakota were high school sweethearts who ended up each going their own way. Then they co-inherit her late grandfather’s farm (with unusual conditions attached).
Chance is the first one to come around to hoping that he and Dakota can be reunited romantically, mainly because he sees how becoming a Christ-follower and believer has changed her.
5. What is the most caring thing your heroine has ever done for your hero?
Dakota hasn’t seen Chance for several years when they first meet again in the story. His face is now badly scarred from a tragic car accident that killed his parents. She reaches up to touch his scars. Unfortunately, Chance is over-sensitive about the scars and stops her, because he fears that women of marrying age only feel sorry for him rather than like him for who he is.
6. Who said, “I love you” first, your hero or your heroine?
Dakota is the first to confess her love for Chance, but not to him. Instead she tells his grandfather, but also mentions that she feels love isn’t always enough. That, of course, is the lie she believes at the beginning of the story.
7. If you hero and heroine end up married, where will they go on their honeymoon?
My best guess for Chance and Dakota’s honeymoon location (if they end up married) is a tropical island they can only reach by boat. They’ll spend the week walking the beach and eating in quaint restaurants on the seaside.
