Shannon here: Historical romance author, Darlene Franklin shares insight into her fictional characters’ romance from her latest release, Golden Dreams. Darlene is giving away 1 copy per every 10 comments on this post. Deadline: August 24th, 11:59 pm central time. Here’s Darlene:
- What’s the most romantic thing your hero ever did for your heroine?
Frank choreographs Winnie’s national-figure-skating-championship routine that shows how his love for her has grown.
- Do your hero and heroine have a favorite song?
The hymn, “Faith is the Victory,” means a lot to both of Frank and Winnie. The opening line, “Encamped along the hills of light,” makes them think of Vermont’s Green Mountains, and they both desperately want victory at skating competitions. Of course, they will always love the song, “Climb a Tree With Me,” the music Winnie skates to.
- How soon after meeting the hero did the heroine know he was the one?
Winnie has known Frank all of her life, and has had a crush on him since she was a young girl. When he returns home and agrees to coach her skating, she falls more deeply in love but believes the hero doesn’t return the feelings.
- How soon after meeting the heroine did the hero know she was the one?
Frank knows within a few months after returning home after a six year absence; but he doesn’t want to distract Winnie from her dreams of national and international skating victories.
- What is the most caring thing your hero has ever done for your heroine?
When she accidentally burned her only pair of skates, he gathered the community of Maple Notch to buy her new ones.
- If you hero and heroine end up married, where will they go on their honeymoon?
They get married during the middle of the Great Depression. If they go anywhere, it might be overnight to a hotel in Burlington, Vermont, the closest town of any size. Perhaps they cloud “splurge” on a weekend on Montreal, which is less than a hundred miles away from their community in northern Vermont.

About the book – Golden Dreams:
WINNIE TUTTLE DREAMS ABOUT SKATING
With hometown champion Frank Sawtelle as her coach, she has a real chance to compete in the world’s foremost skating competition. But her siblings want her helping on the farm—not wasting time on the ice. And as her feelings for Frank turn to love, she wonders if he could ever feel the same.
Still bitter over the injury that shattered his competitive hopes, coaching Winnie resurrects Frank’s career. But as his love for her grows, a romance could jeopardize her success. While he keeps his feelings to himself, he yearns for a future with Winnie…one more precious than gold.

Stacy, so glad you enjoyed the interview.
Bonnie, Glad to hear you enjoy stories during Great Depression. Publishers often avoid them, because they feel like they are sad. But I find them full of conflict and finding hope in the midst of a difficult situation.
Oh, Darlene. Winnie and Frank’s story sounds so good. I would love to win it. Thanx for the chance. Thanx for the interview, Shannon.
