Shannon here: Karin Beery shares insight into her characters’ romance from her latest Contemporary Romance Novella, Avoiding Marriage. Comment or answer the question in this post to enter the drawing for an e-book copy. Deadline: May 1st, 11:59 pm central time. Here’s Karin:
- What’s the most romantic thing your hero ever did for your heroine?
Jess, the heroine, has had some struggles in the past few years. She’s trying to fix her reputation, and it’s not going well. Carter, the hero, isn’t trying to be heroic or even romantic, but he can’t help it. He’s a good listener, and that ends up being the most romantic thing he can do for Jess because he always knows what she wants and needs (because he listens!).
- Do your hero and heroine have as favorite romantic restaurant?
Carter’s a history buff, so in his mind the most romantic restaurant is the new Mediterranean place in Charlevoix because that’s where they had their first lunch date together.
- What is your hero’s favorite romantic vacation destination?
The Smokey Mountains. Carter grew up in Tennessee, and the mountains were his family’s place to escape. They’re not only beautiful, they’re full of history. He could spend a week hiking the trails or visiting historic sites; either option would make him happy.
- What is your heroine’s favorite romantic vacation destination?
Jess doesn’t drink much, but some of her favorite places to visit are wineries, especially the ones with rooms with a view. Not only are wineries romantic places, but the owners can talk about soil, climate, and the best irrigation and fertilization techniques.
- Who is most romantic, your hero or your heroine?
Definitely Carter. You don’t spend a lifetime studying genealogy without reading some amazing love letters and learning how couples made marriages last. He’s looking forward to using some of those lines on Jess in the future.
- How soon after meeting the hero did the heroine know he was the one?
It took a few weeks, not because Carter’s not amazing but because Jess wasn’t looking or paying attention.
- How soon after meeting the heroine did the hero know she was the one?
It only took two or three conversations before Carter knew Jess was amazing.

sweetest thing is my daughter wrote me a poem and framed it with rose petals for my birthday.
Katie Andersen says
When we were dating, my now husband got me pretty flowers for Mother’s Day. I had a 5 year old then, and it meant a lot for him to acknowledge the holiday for me when she is not his biological child, but now that we are married, he is her dad! But it meant a lot to me at that time in my life for him to celebrate that holiday for me when he didn’t have to.
Hannah B says
Sweetest thing- it’s small but my friend was making homemade Mac and cheese. After a second I asked if she was going to offer me some. Her response: “you don’t like orange melted cheese cause it makes you queasy.” I don’t remember telling her that but I mentioned it and she remembered.
