My first date with my husband was at the end of our Junior year in High School. We’d been good friends for a long time. We hung around together on Saturday nights with a group of friends. I liked him a lot and a friend had told me that he really liked me. But I didn’t want to start dating. I knew it wouldn’t work out … what were the chances, huh? We were sixteen. And I knew that when it didn’t work out, I’d lose one of my best friends.
But finally one of my girl friends convinced me to go out on a double date with her. We went to a drive in movie. I can’t tell you what it was, but I’ll bet my husband could. He remembers details like that. We sat in the back seat together on the double date and that sounds romantic but we just watched the movie and talked and had a good time. Then he drove me home, we’d met the couple we were double dating with in town, my husband and I both lived in the country. So he took me home and we went inside and my mom had made cinnamon rolls. She’s a great cook and still makes the best cinnamon rolls in the world, although my husband claims HIS mother makes the best cinnamon rolls in the world, so my mom had her work cut out for her to make a good impression.
So we ate cinnamon rolls and I walked him back to his car and we sat in the car for a while and finally he asked me if he could kiss me. I said yes. Then, a very brief kiss later, he pulls back and says, “Your lip were a little sticky from the cinnamon rolls. But I thin they’re all cleaned off now. Let’s try it again.”
I still smile when I think of it because it’s a pretty smooth line and we were both anything but smooth. Our third date was our Junior prom. And though things didn’t always run smoothly, we were together until I graduated from college and we got married. Thirty four and a half years ago.
About the book: Rafe Kincaid controls everything in his life. His brothers, his ranch and above all himself. Then he meets Julia Gilliland, a woman who’s also used to running things.
Not only can’t Rafe control Julia, he can’t control himself from falling in love with the little firebrand.

Mary, That’s so sweet. Do you get the awed reaction when you tell people you were high school sweethearts, like it’s a two headed calf? It just amazes people. John and I have been married 23 years, but together 26. We were juniors in high school when we began dating. Even I am surprised to find out that relationships have lasted that long.
And anyway, I have the best cinnamon roll recipe, but would not refuse a chance to put it up against yours. I already have your book. But if you put me in I can give it to the cousins who have confiscated every other Mary Coneally signed book I have and maybe I’ll be able to keep it. 🙂

Dawn, 23 year, you seem like a kid to me. But you started as young as me, so you could be married that long and still be really YOUNG.

I guess I’m just a sentimental old fool. I read your post and cried through most of it. It was so sweet and lovely. I loved the fact that your husband had to kiss you again because most of the sticky was gone after the first kiss! I’ll bet the second kiss was a great do over! 🙂 I love happy stories involving long lasting marriages.

One of the things about Out of Control that I think is a true mindset of this era is how fast Rafe falls for Julia. And not even really falls for her, more like claims her. Decides he wants her and sets out to get her. The thing is, I think a lot of marriages used to be like that. People would see someone they liked and wanted, they’d get married and even if there were some surprises after marriage, they’d make it work. It was the committment and the horror of divorce. They’d figure something out and stick together.
Now, in modern life, two people see each other and want each other and, without the restrictions Christians put on their choices, they just end up … choosing a tactful word for it, but they end up physically together with no committment and the only intention to stay together coming long after that first fire of attraction has been burned away. So Rafe sees Julie, one of the few women he’s ever seen in his life, and wants her and bang, let’s get married. No long searching need to understand his feelings there. Love, well, maybe, someday, no rush on that. But marriage, absolutely and right now.
I think your future husband’s line about the stickiness from the cinnamon rolls and trying “it” again is a great line — very romantic.

The first book I ever read from Mary Connealy was Montana Rose. I re-read it every once in a while and it always makes me smile. I love stories about love; love for God, love for family, friends and for that special someone. I love that in Mary’s books they are always cowboys 🙂 God bless you & your family very much. Carolynn, I’m so glad you liked Montana Rose. I think of it as my attempt to set a scene similar to Love Comes Softly. Pregnant widow, marriage of convenience to a near stranger. The only thing is, while Janette Oke’s beautiful classic lovestory is a monument to the gentle awakening of true love, my books has taken an alarming turn toward mayhem and comedy. I just can’t seem to control myself!!!
