Morgan L. Busse – Real Life & Character Romance – Part 1 of 1

Shannon here: Morgan L. Busse shares how she met her husband and how her characters meet from her Christian Fantasy novel, Daughter of Light. It was love at first tackle. Or maybe just bruises. Whatever the case, I first met Dan on a cold afternoon at a youth winter camp.
The guys had decided to start a game of football. I was a new freshman who hardly knew anyone. But I did love football, so I decided to join in.
On the other team was this buff senior who always had a grin on his face. He was kinda cute, but out of my league. I was a science geek in school and he definitely looked like one of the jocks, not to mention years ahead of me in high school.
The game began.
Not long afterward, Dan’s team had possession of the ball. The ball flew and Dan caught it and started sprinting down the field. I was the only one on my team between him and the goal. So I did the only thing I could to stop him: I tackled him to the ground.
We both stared at each other in shock. At the time, Dan could bench press over 300 pounds and there was hardly a guy who could take him out. However, on that wintry afternoon it was a short, blond girl standing over him.
He spoke to me for the first time. “I’m going to call you freight train from now on.”
I grinned and helped him up. From that moment, we became good friends and after a couple years, fell in love.
My kids love that story!
My characters meet in a similar shocking way. At the end of Daughter of Light, Caleb Tala, assassin for the Temanin Empire, is tasked to interrogate anyone caught during the war. Spy after spy is brought to his tent and he deals with them accordingly.
However, when he pulls the hood off a person brought to his tent days later, he finds a woman instead of a man. A woman who is neither a spy nor the enemy, just someone in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Nierne is a scribe from the faraway city of Thyra. After her city is destroyed, she travels across the mountains in hope of finding a special race of people that can save what is left of her homeland. Unfortunately, she stumbles into the Temanin war camp and is captured. Believed to be a spy, she is brought to Caleb’s tent to be interrogated.
Their relationship starts off with tension, but eventually blossoms into love between two of the most unlikely people: an assassin and a scribe.
Son of Truth, the second book in the Follower of the Word series, follows Caleb and Nierne as they learn to trust each other. And Heir of Hope, the final book, solidifies their love as they face the shadows and death together.
I love stories about how opposite people find love. Perhaps because that is my own love story.
