- What’s the most romantic present your spouse ever bought for you?
The most romantic present my husband ever gave me was one he made himself. We were tight on money and getting ready to celebrate our anniversary. When I went to bed the evening before, I knew my husband had something rattling around in his head but figured it was simply a card he was trying to shield from me.
I woke to a beautiful day, nothing amiss, and while we wished each other a happy anniversary, nothing more was really said. I left to do something and when I returned, he was very enthusiastic–like a little puppy excited to see a special visitor. He led me into our bedroom and there, taped to our huge window, were 20 paper hearts, each with their own little sweet-nothing message, one for each year of marriage. Truly, that was so precious to me. Far better than a card or any dinner at a fancy restaurant.
- What was the single biggest attraction to draw the hero and heroine together?
Being that “A Heartbeat Away” is set before, during, and after the Battle of Antietam, and that Joe is one of the wounded brought to Beth, her attraction to Joe is his frailty. When the battle begins in earnest, tending Joe is a distraction to her. What she doesn’t expect is the closeness they share when, in his lucid moments, they are able to talk and share the heartaches they have faced. When Beth discovers Joe’s true story of the sacrifice that got him wounded, she is endeared to him that much more.

Her mother’s mysterious goodbye gift is filled with quilt blocks that bring comfort to Beth during the hard days and lonely nights, but as she sews each block, she realizes there is a hidden message of faith within the pattern that encourages and sustains her.
Reunited with Joe, Beth learns his secret and puts the quilt’s message to its greatest test—but can betrayal be forgiven?

What a romantic, sweet gesture! You are blessed.
wow…what a cool idea…weave a message in quilt blocks….intrigued!
KayM, I am. Truly!
Nat. When the quilt had to become central to the plot, well, the challenge was enormous for this author. How do you make a quilt central to the plot? But then I thought of a mother’s love. . .her concern when she saw one of her “babies” suffering. . .and she wanted to reach out to that child in the only way she knew how. . .
Thanks for dropping by!
