My husband was in the hospital again this year. He has a recurring disorder and as long as he goes to the hospital when it happens, it’s not life-threatening. It hasn’t happened since 2005. So long, I’d almost forgotten what it was like to have him in the hospital.
I spent the night with him the first night. And they didn’t have a reclining chair. So I slept in an upright position with my feet propped on the edge of his bed. Neither of us slept. Every time we dozed, they’d come to get his vitals or take blood. He couldn’t eat until they ran tests, so I didn’t eat either. Halfway through the next day, they brought me a reclining chair. By then, he’d improved and we both got a good nap.
Once they ran tests and he was still knocked out, I snuck down to the cafeteria, got a sandwich, and ate while he slept. Once he woke up, he could finally eat, but it was in between meal time so they brought him a sandwich. A few hours later, they brought us both a tray. The best meat loaf we ever ate. I don’t know why hospital food gets such a bad wrap.
I wanted to stay the second night. But we have an eleven year old and my husband wanted me to go home and make sure our son was okay.
He got to come home the next morning. His sister went with me to pick him up and we ate at Cracker Barrel. The next day, he was supposed to rest, but he’d already promised to do the opening prayer at the Arkansas House of Representatives session (pictured above).
He hasn’t rested like he was supposed to. He has cut a few things out of his diet. And so far, no more flare ups. Life is getting back to normal.
And I’m thankful that he’s okay. Sometimes, life interrupts the romance. But we’re in this together–in sickness and in health.

It was nerve-racking, Brenda. But not as frightening since we knew what we were dealing with this time. Still not fun though. The House of Representatives prayer was quite an honor. And thanks for the congrats. It is seven. One day we’ll be celebrating your seventh.
Shannon, I’m sure it was quite a scare with your husband. What a blessing that he was able to get to the hospital and recover quickly. I hope it’s a long time (or never) before he has a flare-up/recurrence. It such a blessing that there is help for him.
