Shannon here: Aspiring writer, Sherri Stone shares her no fail turkey recipe. Every time you comment, your name goes in the drawing for a copy of Megan DiMaria’s Searching for Spice or Lena Nelson Dooley’s Maggie’s Journey. Deadline: Nov 26th, 11:59 pm central time. Here’s Sherri:
Sherri’s no fail turkey
preheat oven to 350
rinse turkey and pat dry (you do know to take all the stuff out of the cavity first, right?)
rub turkey inside and out with butter – kids can help with this part – they love it!
take an equal number of apples and pears (amount depends on the size of your turkey – we usually use 3-4 of each), dice them up in medium to large pieces and toss them with sugar and cinnamon.
fill turkey cavity with apple/pear mixture
season outside of turkey with a little season salt and garlic powder (or whatever seasoning you like)
place a rack in the bottom of your roasting pan so turkey doesn’t sit directly on the bottom
Place turkey in a plastic cooking bag
pour 1-2 cups of chicken broth into the bag and seal it. Make two or three small slits in the bag to let out steam.
bake turkey for 20 minutes per pound.
This “recipie” works for any size turkey. It is super easy and you will never have a dry turkey again. The meat is juicy and tender and falls off the bone – not so good if you’re one of those families that likes to carve at the table. We’re not! It’s also a little sweet which is really nice, and you can serve the apple / pear mixture as a side dish. Delicious!
This is now my favorite (and only, if I’m cooking) way to cook a turkey. You really have to work hard to mess this up! I’d love to know how your turkey turns out…
Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours.

Sounds like such an easy way to do the bird! Cooking bags really make life easy!!!!! Happy Thanksgiving to all.
Thanx Shannon for your blog and giveaways. You are a blessing. Hope you are published soon Sherri, looking forward to your books.

Julie and Kim – You can absolutely do this in a roaster. I think the key is to have it sealed with some liquid – whatever you choose – inside the cooking container (bag or roaster). That keeps it moist along with the juicy apples and pears inside the turkey itself. We really like this recipe and use it every time we cook a turkey. I’d love to hear from you after you try this. I hope you’ll love it as much as we do. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Jennifer, thanks for your comment. I hope you’ll get to read one of my books one day. 🙂

Glad everyone is buzzing about Sherrie’s recipe. If I were to cook a turkey, I’d try it. So far, I’ve gotten out of providing the main dish.

Here’s a crazy story about me. I have a cookbook collection, yet I DON’T cook. I read them like novels and enjoy the pictures. My kids use to say that the way I called them to eat was, “Everybody get in the car”.
sherri says
Illene, that made me think of me, only with exercise videos. Love to watch people doing all that exercise that just melts the pounds ways, but, um… yeah, love to watch! 🙂 Ha! Usually while I’m eating some kind of heavenly junk food – chocolate, chips and dip… Hmm. Getting hungry now!

Hi. Since I already have regular stuffing mix bought for my turkey, would it work to dice up apples and add to the stuffing mix? Would it still taste ok and give it the moisture needed?
Thanks for your recipie.

Debbie I’m not typically a stuffing person – at least not until we started doing the apple and pear thing. I can’t imagine a stuffing mix that wouldn’t go well with apples, though, so I say, give it a try. The apples (and pears if you use them) will only add moisture and some really nice flavor. Sometimes the best recipes come from trying things just like this, and I think it sounds great. Please let me know how it turns out. I’d love to know.
