1. Where is the most romantic place you and your spouse have ever been?
On our first date my spouse took me up in his private plane and we had dinner at a lodge by a lake. Usually there was a shuttle from the landing strip to the restaurant, but the shuttle wasn’t working that night. I wore four inch heels and a form-fitting dress and the restaurant was situated at the top of a hill. The road up was gravel. After taking a few steps I told Larry this wasn’t going to work. He swept me up in his arms and carried me up the hill to the restaurant. Needless to say, he captured my heart that night.
2. Do you and your spouse have a favorite song?
I’ll Never Love This Way Again.
3. Do you and your spouse have a favorite romantic vacation destination?
I’ve always wanted to travel, but never had the funds. My spouse loves to travel as well, and funds or not, we do travel. He’s taken me to so many awesome romantic places, it’s hard to name just one. I think possibly the most romantic was when we sailed our own sailboat through the British Virgin Isles. We anchored where we wanted and enjoyed six nights of fabulous sunsets and seven days of sailing from spot to spot to discover the most beautiful. We sailed to the Bitter End Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda. After we anchored, we walked between bougainvillea-hanging ancient stone walls that lined the walkway all the half-mile or so to the Club. We ate fish we caught in the ocean prepared in the boat’s tiny galley and eaten outside on the cockpit cushions under billowing sails. We sailed to Jost Van Dyke and swam on the remote beach where there were no buildings and no people. We visited Norman Island, the Treasure Island of Robert Louis Stevenson’s great tale, and walked among the steep hills accompanied only by sure-footed goats. We visited the Black Baltic Trader now a pirate ship, but those long, romantic nights with our only illumination the stars and a few lights from other anchored sailboats were unforgettable.
4. What simple gesture does your spouse do that melts you every time?
This is a little personal, but he definitely has that look that needs no words. I love it.
5. How soon after meeting you did your spouse know you were the one?
We met in the lovely parlor of a large church at a singles fellowship group. Probably two hundred people milled around the room. When I walked in, a newcomer among friends who knew each other, my husband tells me he decided that I was the woman he would marry. He beelined to my side and dominated the other men who came to meet me. When I discovered he actually knew about my first published book, he went to the top of my list of men I wanted to date.
6. Who said, “I love you” first, you or your spouse?
Oh, my husband said “I love you” way before I was ready to hear it. I was having a lot of fun dating a number of interesting men and I was far from being ready to settle down. He surprised me very early in our relationship. I hadn’t even begun to think love, but I did care for him quite a bit. He did have one very serious competitor, but he lived in a different state, which made dating a bit difficult. So, I had to start making some decisions.
7. Where did you and your spouse go for your honeymoon?
We spent a week in Cancun for our honeymoon. We stayed at the Hiatt Caribe, sun bathed on the cool sand, snorkled in the clear aqua water and well, did all the fantastic things people do on honeymoons. Since we both are avid historians, we also rented a Volkswagen and drove to Chichenitza where we toured the fabulous Mayan ruins, climbed the great Pyramid and entered the Temple of the Warriors where Chac Mool’s sacrificial altar still shows blood stains. We walked to the Grand Cenote and gazed down into the bottomless pool the Mayans believed led to the portals of the underworld—the place virgins were sacrificed. During the ride back to the hotel in Cancun we were caught in a hurricane. There is only one two-laned road. On each side, several feet below the road are fields that look like waving grass. Only a few very primitive houses dot the area. While the rain and wind battered our little car, we had no place to stop, no place to turn around and go back, no place to pull off the road. We could only go forward. At times our little car floated where the road flooded. It was a wonderful adventure. We sang all the way back to the hotel.
