While writing Shadowed by Grace, I lived vicariously in one of the most romantic spots on earth. Where did we get romance languages? Where did pasta originate? Where do people dream of going on honeymoons and vacations?
Why Italy of course!
Through the pages of the book and my research, I felt like I settled into Naples, Rome and finally Florence. Exploring the countryside in between. Smelling the grapes warming in the summer air. Viewing the vistas, monuments, and art. One of my best finds was a castle about 18 kilometers outside Florence. Montegufoni is a key setting in my book because it was one of the main repositories for Florence’s wealth of art during WWII. Yet as I researched I discovered something fascinating.
Montegufoni is currently a hotel where I could stay!
I have spent hours staring at photos vacationers have taken, perusing the website, soaking in the atmosphere and ambiance and wondering what exactly would it be like to stay there.
If we stayed there, we’d have to make day trips to Florence and Sienna. Visit the places I wrote about in Florence. But I can’t think of many locations that would be more romantic or a better place to escape. A castle for a hotel. Vineyards leading to olive groves leading into cities filled with ancient buildings and incredible art. Cafes with fresh pasta. It sounds like the ideal set-up for romance for me.
