Shannon here: Caryl McAdoo shares how her characters are like or unlike her. You’ll have to read the blog to learn details on how to enter the drawing for an e-book copy of Uniquely Common. Deadline: April 20th, 11:59 pm central time. Here’s Caryl:
UNIQUELY COMMON is, of course, an oxymoron, as was the title of my first Lockets and Lace Collection contribution in 2018, SILENT HARMONY, but as I thought of comparing myself to the heroine of my newest release, Christina Adams, I came to the conclusion that none of us are common.
We are each unique to be certain, all made in God’s image, yet all different, and none common.
Down deep, Christina knew she was fearfully and wonderfully made, but rejection had taken its toll on her confidence, and because her ex-fiancé left her for royalty, it left her feeling very common. The truth is, neither Christina nor I have ever really felt common—for different reasons. She was the baby and only daughter, and I was the oldest, an only child for eight years. But we both grew up feeling special! Not common!
And there are many other similarities! Which do you think are . . .
TRUTH or FICTION?
- Christina and Caryl like to play games and are both very competitive.
- Christina and Caryl have both suffered rejection.
- Christina and Caryl love to read and remember every story.
- Christina and Caryl long for the man God made especially to be her husband.
- Christina and Caryl are bold and outspoken.
Steel sharpens steel, but will its sparks ignite unfailing love?
Instead of living a pampered life on the civilized east coast with a new husband, rejection compels Christina Adams westward with her widowed brother and his two daughters. Harboring ulterior motives, Ethan Cord, the man her brother hires to accompany the family, is more a match for her. He appears almost perfect, but how could she possibly trust her instincts about him when she’d been so wrong about her previous fiancé? Will her past ruin her future?
And I thought you might enjoy an excerpt or an early review:
SO back to TRUTH or FICTION!
1) Yes. I grew up in a game playing family and have loved games since I can remember! Christina’s the same way and hates to lose as much as I do! She loves chess though where I’m not so keen on it. I play bridge times a week, three times the third week as I add the once-a-month ladies’ afternoon bridge gathering.
My beloved husband Ron and I play also play Quirkle three times almost every day at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We keep lots of scores and records. 😊 That game’s, on-going totals for the month, most quirkles in a game, highest scoring game, biggest margin to win a game, most quirkles in a game . . . should I go on? 😊
Believing husbands and wifes who play together stay together, we also play hundreds of Acquire games every year with Ron’s brother Bruce—since the mid ‘70s! We are both very competitive and love playing games that involve a lot of thinking and not so much chance.
2) Yes, we both have suffered rejection. Hasn’t everyone? It hurts, but the Lord allows it and always uses it for our good because we love Him and are called according to His purpose! Mine wasn’t a man breaking off an engagement, but the source makes little difference—usually someone we love or trust. Praise the Lord, we both came to the knowledge that our God will never leave or forsake or reject us!
3) Well, I suppose the answer is yes, although Christina is an avid reader who reads lots of books and retains the stories. These days, while I do love reading, time is so restricted as I’m more an avid writer who, given time, will even forget my own stories enough to enjoy them all over again as though someone else wrote them! Tee hee hee I can also see a movie twice because I will forget it enough to enjoy it all over again.
4) Christina is definitely longing to find that man, even if she does second guess them all after trusting that cad Reggie! It’s hard to know that you know ‘he’s the one’, isn’t it? And I admit, though already a Christian several years at the age of sixteen, I wasn’t paying too much attention to hear God’s voice—no one taught me I still could!
So, when I met Ron, I really didn’t know God had formed a special man in his mother’s womb to be my husband I should be searching for. After we had our first date though, we were together from then on. That was almost fifty-three years ago! Now I know and thank the Lord that by His mercy, I truly married the one He made for me!
For this one, the answer is no! She’s looking, I’m not! I haven’t been looking for a long time. I found my beloved. He is mine, and I am his! Praise the Lord!
5) Yes to the last question! My Christina and I are both bold and unafraid to share our opinions! A few more things we have in common is loving our nieces, loving horses and hats. I’m more of an adventure than she is, but we both are the type to do what needs to be done. Oh, and we both love to play match-maker to any single person we come into contact with!

1. I love games! I am also competitive but I don’t get upset when I lose! I have friends who are not competitive and want to help each other and don’t even comment when they have won. Not me!
Rebecca Booth says
3 is my pick! I love playing games with my son and grandson! Rejection is so hard, but I’ve learned to go with the flow and trust that some things aren’t meant for me! I will surely give my opinion especially if it’s something I believe in!
Carmina Lavergne says
I absolutely love games too. I brought my children up on board games. I saw it as quality time together. Bahaha. Oh yes, whilst I’m not that competitive, I too had running scores……for Scrabble! Actual finishing scores, most unusal words, highest scoring words etc. Lots of fun. Scrabble is my favorite gane (Facebook equivalent is Lexulous….I love it).
I am also an avid reader. … at least, I was. Can’t buy books at the moment and had to gove all my books away, but soon I will be able to……

I love to play games and just for the fun of playing..the most thing I have faced many times is rejection. First from my parents and from the boy I loved. I have learned to accept and deal with it and u believe I have become a bit stronger because of it.

# 1 As a child I loved playing games. My Daddy taught me to play Chinese Checkers and I loved it. I played games for a few years into my twenty’s. Much later, I enjoyed playing Bible Trivia online with a great bunch of people for about 10 years. Now I play a word game and let it set for days if I get stuck.

I forgot to say that I already have the book Uniquely Common.

I love to play games, I play games with my grandchildren , we play scrabble, monopoly , cards, Sorry, checkers, and lots of other games. The only game that I have beat my grandson only about once , maybe twice is Checkers, my grandson is pretty good at checkers and beats me like a drum on checkers, whenever we play a game of checkers, we, or I will correct that I want to keep on playing cause I want to beat him on the game, but, like usual he beat me, oh well, sometimes you win and if it’s me I always loose at checkers when I play with him, it is a lot of fun though. 🙂 The book sounds very intriguing and I Love the cover.
