Shannon here: Erin Howard shares insight into her real life romance, plus a chance to win a Kindle copy of her Young Adult Fantasy novel, The Seer (The Kalila Chronicles Book #1). Heads up, Erin’s book is published by the small press I’m now an editor for. Comment or answer the question in this post to enter the drawing. Deadline: August 8th, 11:59 pm central time. Here’s Erin:
While my YA urban fantasy series does not focus on romance, there is a small romance thread that is inspired by the funny and witty banter between me and my husband. I met Jacob in my sophomore year of high school.
In the late summer of 1998, and I was at a youth group event, and there was a water fight. I was running away from a guy in the group when I heard a pop, pop, pop, pop.
I fell to the ground and shattered my knee cap. Needless to say, I had to have surgery, and the doctor told me that the popping noise I heard was my cartilage detaching before I fell.
My best friend came to see me once I got home and decided it would be a great time to fix my hair and do my makeup. I had no idea why she was going to such great lengths, but she invited Jacob and his brother over to come see me.
Jacob was a senior at the time, and we never really talked much. His best friend was dating my best friend, and his brother was in my class so I didn’t think much of it at the time. We chatted for a long time, and I still can’t remember what we talked about that day.
After that, we started chatting online and talking on the phone. We quickly became friends and started going to the movies together. Homecoming rolled around and we went together, and it wasn’t long until he asked me to be his girlfriend. I said no at the time, that I wasn’t ready for any relationship.
We still went on group dates, chatted every night on ICQ (I know this will show my age here), and we argued. Just like, Thea and Sam in my series, we enjoy teasing and annoying each other. After my sixteenth birthday party, I finally decided it was silly that we weren’t together and I sent an email that said I was ready.
We dated for three years before we got married, and this year we celebrated our eighteenth wedding anniversary, which was on our dating anniversary. It wasn’t until right about the time we got engaged that we talked about that time I turned him down, and we both realized what happened. Every day for two years prior, I prayed for my future spouse, that God would send them to me, and that I would know they were the one.
Every time I think about it now, I can’t help but smile. Because, it turns out, that Jacob prayed that very same prayer, during the same two years I did.

About the book – The Seer:
Viktor has one order to follow:
Kill the girl before her eyes are opened.
For thousands of years, his job has been to torment and kill seers: humans that have the gift of seeing the spiritual realm. So it was no surprise when his brother Matthias was once again sent to stop him and protect the girl.
Now the last of the seers’ bloodline hangs in the balance, as the estranged demon and angel brothers are forced to work together to save a girl’s life and escape to the sanctuary city of Bethesda.
The Seer was originally published by Mantle Rock Publishing on 02/27/18 before it sold and re-released with Expanse Books, an imprint of Scrivenings Press on July 1, 2020.

Hey Erin, glad to have you here. Let’s see, I have many blessings to count. But I’ll pick the main one that’s taken place lately. I had the thought I’d like to be an editor someday. And God made it happen.
