I can get lonely sitting in a quiet office staring at a blank piece of paper, listening to the hum of the dryer behind me. Fortunately, I’ve gotten a little help from my friends and have been less isolated since joining American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW).
I’m honored to have met two acclaimed bestselling, award-winning authors, Nancy Mehl and Loree Lough. I met Nancy when I hosted her on my blog and got to know Loree in a chat room where we discussed romance books. Both authors endorsed Barely above Water, the first novel I published after joining ACFW.
I still swap ideas and advice with June Foster and Mildred Colvin, two award-winning authors from the ACFW critique group I joined. June is the author of the popular Cranberry Inn Cove series. Mildred is the author of sixty books, including her best sellers, The Oregon Trail and Hands of Love series. I also explored the Christian publishing world with a critique partner, Lisa Lickel. Lisa and I not only exchanged writing tips, but she has the heart of a teacher. It probably took all the patience she had to help me with computer know-how. She’s the author of one of my favorite books, Undercut, a page-turning suspense. She also has an editing service.
I’m blessed with loved ones who have an interest in my writing, including my cousins who offer words of encouragement. One of them, whose mother was an English teacher, inherited her mother’s expertise and proofreads some of my books.
Since the digital age often leaves me behind, my daughter checks to make sure I’m using the latest
technology in my manuscripts. Much earlier, when she was five, she and my husband went with me to a magazine conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Then, Opryland was a popular theme park, so my husband took our daughter to the park while I went to the workshops. Then, the two of them attended the dinner with me.
When we entered the dining area and sat down, my daughter looked at the empty seat beside her. “No one wants to sit by me,” she said, her voice sad.
My husband quickly answered. “You have the best seat in the house. The ghost writer is sitting by you.”
I’m thankful for the many kind, helpful writing friends I’ve crossed paths with, family cheerleaders and readers, but most of all I thank the Lord for leading me through this writing journey, often wrought with briars and brambles as well as sunflowers and daisies.

About the book – Dangerous Shadows (Discipleship Series, Book 3):
Shaken from an assault in the library parking lot at Hilltop College in Western North Carolina, crime reporter Emily Hanover contacts her ex-fiancé, private investigator Nick Lancaster. When the college hires Nick to recover quartz and ancient maps stolen from the library, Nick insists there’s a connection between the theft and Emily’s attack. As Nick and Emily face danger from an elusive stalker, their romance rekindles. Nick’s sidekick, Hucklesford, spots two suspects, so he and Nick go undercover. While Nick’s surveillance points to illegal gambling and murder, Hucklesford’s investigation leads him to the college cross-country team. Can Nick and Hucklesford, along with Emily, connect the stalker, theft, college student, and gambler’s murder to solve this baffling mystery? Will Nick and Emily find true love?
What readers are saying: “Will they make it out alive and to the life they hope will bind their future, or do they know too much, and the figure haunting the shadows may put an end to everything?”
