Character interview: Rose Hill Townsend, Love’s Golden Quest
- What is the most caring thing your spouse has ever done for you?
It’s no secret our marriage was arranged. Still grieving the loss of my parents, Reverend Smyth counseled me to accept Luke Townsend’s offer of marriage. I was so uncertain of what the future held and there were no options for a single woman in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Luke is such a thoughtful man. Knowing my uncertainty, he suggested that although we were man and wife we should consider ourselves as courting couple until we reached California. The sacrifice my husband made to ease my fears was very romantic in my opinion.
- Where is the most romantic place you and your spouse have ever been?
We’ve seen so many beautiful sites along the trail. Ash Hollow was breathtaking and Alco Spring was so much fun, but watching fireworks from the top of Independence Rock was absolutely the most romantic. We joined our friends in singing gospel songs while waiting for the fireworks to be set off. Luke was very protective and made sure I enjoyed myself.
- How soon after meeting your spouse did you know he was the one?
The moment I met Luke I knew he was special, but I’m ashamed to say it wasn’t until I nearly lost him that I realized how much I loved and needed him.
- How soon after meeting you did your spouse know you were the one?
He claims it was the first day we met. He and his brothers showed up at the parsonage to help my parents move into our new home in St. Joseph.
- Who is most romantic, you or your spouse?
Luke is much more romantic than I am. Most times I’m too practical for my own good. The only child of a preacher, I was a serious minded child and still am as an adult.
- Who said, “I love you” first, you or your spouse?
I did. He showed it daily but held back, waiting until I was ready to be a wife in more than name only. I wish I’d told him sooner instead of waiting until it was almost too late. Now I don’t let a day go by without telling those I love how I feel.
- Where did you and your spouse go for your honeymoon?
Well, we headed west on the Oregon Trail right after the wedding. The wagon train was scheduled to leave the next day, but a storm forced us to leave shortly after we made our vows. I guess you could say we took a three month honeymoon traveling across the country.
About the book – Loves Golden Quest: Can the perilous unknowns of the Wild West and an arranged marriage heal a grieving young woman and a man determined to find a world to claim as his own?
ROSE HILL never thought she would marry someone she didn’t love, but after the death of her parents, she believes she has no other choice. And if she follows the advice of her pastor and mentors, it will have to be soon. During the height of the gold rush, LUKE TOWNSEND dreams of starting a ranch out west. When his fiancée learns of his plan she leaves him for a doctor back east. Brokenhearted, he’s determined to make a new start.

Jamie Adams says
Lisa, I really enjoyed the research that went into writing this book. That whole time period in our history fascinates me. At times I think I was born a few hundred years too late but then when I see the struggles they faced daily I’m happy to let a book take me there. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by!

Mail order bride stories are some of my favorite, even though they are much more romantic in stories than in real life! martha(at)lclink(dot)com
