The Love of Family by Katy Lee
I write romance, but in my latest Love Inspired Suspense Amish Country Undercover, my heroine Grace Miller demonstrates the supportive care the Amish communities have for their kin. Grace has a father with dementia and is watching him slip away more and more each day. He doesn’t remember her, but she has a lifetime of memories of him. Traditionally, the Amish take care of their elderly and consider it an important responsibility, but dementia and Alzheimer’s is heartbreaking for anyone, and many times difficult to care for. In my story, Grace fears her Daed is gone forever, but still won’t give up on him.
I find the Amish community’s way of supporting family to be a beautiful act of selflessness. It is my hope that I was able to show Grace’s selflessness in her decision to care for her father and how it helps her to mature as well. Writing the relationship between Grace and her father mirrored my own relationship with my mom who suffers from a mental disorder. I hoped to express how the act of caring for a loved one not only helps the family member, but also gives the caregiver a wider perception on what matters most in this world.
And because I also write suspense, danger also befalls on Grace’s door when someone frames her for the horse
thefts in her community…then nearly kills her. Amish Country Undercover is a race to the finish for Grace, all while she holds her father close to care for him. He is all that matters to her, and the handsome FBI man who comes to arrest her is growing on her too. You’ll have to read the story to find out why.
I do hope you will check out Grace’s story. It’s in stores now.
Thanks again for being here. I would love to hear about your family stories of the important people in your life you have cared for. After all, they are what matters most.

Question for Readers: Why do you love reading Amish books?
Come back Feb 7th for June Foster!
Melissa says
Beautiful story. My dad had cancer and we watched him when we found out he had it. We found out the 4th and passed away the 27th. We watched a man who rembering all to not even know how to do anything it was heart breaking. To my mom passing away during surgery. I was there for it all. I love my parents and with amish, they take pride in all they do. I love the clean stories and how we all should be.
Katy Lee says
Thank you for sharing, Melissa about these hard times you’ve had. I’m so glad your parents had you there to care for them.
Shelia Hall says
I enjoy reading Amish books to see how that they deal with problems while remaining faithful to God.
Shelia Hall says
I have also helped care for my parents as they went through cancer treatments and their death
Katy Lee says
Hi Sheila, thank you for being here and thank you for caring for your parents. Yes, the Amish take this very seriously and genuinely want to be there for their elders throughout their lives.
Anita Whatley says
I’ve also been a caregiver and I’m often reminded of how God washed the disciples feet, showing us His love and teaching us to have a servants heart by helping one another.
One of the things that I really enjoy reading about the Amish is how they always take care of their families and their communities by helping wherever there is a need…. Exemplifying a servants heart and sharing God’s love in their daily lives. Always inspired by their example!
Katy Lee says
Beautifully said. Jesus showed us how to be a servant for a reason.
Shannon Vannatter says
Hey Katy, glad you to have you here. Caregiving is tough. My parents are still healthy so far. But I’ve had to nurse my husband through a recent illness. Thankfully he’s feeling all back to normal again.
Katy Lee says
So glad to hear he is well again. And glad he had you to be there for him.
Kay Garrett says
Totally agree with the Amish in taking care of our elders. We have experienced first hand the horrid disease called Alzheimer. My Mom came to live with us after cancer surgery and the onset of Alzheimer. She lived with us the last five years of her life with four of them being bedridden needing 24/7 care. Hubby and I were full time caregivers never leaving that one of us wasn’t with her because it agitated her not to have one of us in her line of sight. We did all within our power to make her days as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. She might not have known it, but we did. As I’ve told many before, we did what we did out of love feeling no sacrifice was undeserved. We did as I know she had done for us or would have if she were able. Although it was hard, many tears were shed and physical problems from lifting and moving, it was all worth it and I’d do it all again. I can sleep peacefully at night knowing I kept my promise to my Mom not to put her in a nursing home. In God’s love, the night before she died she had a vocal moment and told both hubby and I that she loved us before she went to her heavenly home. I know that she was finally reunited with my Dad. Oh how they loved one another! God is good!
I love reading Amish books because they are good clean reads telling of faith and love for our fellow mankind. They give us lessons of of how to live and ways to strive for what is right. They show us that all of us have struggles but that with God’s help we can come out on top and usually a better person having had gone through the trials.
Thank you for the opportunity to win a copy of “Blindsided”. It and “Amish Country Undercover” are both on my TBR list.

Always find amish theme books a fun read.
Teri-Lyn Calhoun says
There is so much to learn about their culture and the peace they have. Good to see how they group together to show support when something bad touches their lives.
Katy Lee says
They are so sweet…but this has an edge of danger added.
Wendy Newcomb says
I enjoy Amish books because things seem to move at a slower pace than our lives do. Families usually have time for each other and they always have their Sunday to relax, we don’t always take the time for those things.

We took my 90 year old grandma in to live with us when my mom died suddenly. My own boys were 4,6 and 8. It was not easy but God tells us to honor the aged. I love reading Amish fiction books because of their deep faith, simple lifestyle and love for family and others.
Beth Clark says
Amish fiction is a favorite of mine. I have visited Amish settlements and admire them for their religious beliefs and devotion to their communities. This book looks so good with a touch of danger in it.
