Shannon here: Amish Romance author, Laura V. Hilton shares insight into her characters’ romance from her latest title, The Christmas Admirer. Comment or answer the question at the end of the post to enter the drawing for a copy. Deadline: Sept 23, 11:59 pm central time. Here’s Laura:
- Are you open to your own romance?
Yes. I was in a relationship with Benaiah, but he broke up with me for reasons he won’t share. But someone is sneaking into my home late at night leaving secret admirer gifts. I want to catch them… maybe it’d be someone I could love…or do love.
- What’s the number one quality you’d require in a mate?
Faithfulness. A strong faith in God. Love for family. My grandma always told me that how a man treats his mom is how he’ll treat his wife. I want a man who loves me unconditionally.
- Where is the best place you can think of to find a mate?
I’m Amish, so I grew up with most of the men I know. Maybe when someone comes for a wedding or a funeral or other gathering would be good to meet someone new.
- What’s the one habit or lifestyle that would make you run the other way?
Smoking, drinking, drugs, or running around with bad people.
- Where do you dream of getting married?
Right in my home. Maybe the yard, if it’s a nice day. Most Amish get married in their homes.
- Where do you dream of spending your honeymoon?
I would love to go to Niagara Falls. One of my friends talked about going there.
- What would be the best gift a potential mate could buy for you?
Any gift. Another thing my grandma used to say that if a man loves a woman he buys her little gifts. That is why I am so desperate to meet my secret admirer

About the book – The Christmas Admirer: Benaiah Troyer has loved Susanna King for as long as he can remember, but other than a lone summer filled with romantic buggy rides, marrying her remains an elusive dream. When his parents died in an accident a year ago, he broke up with her—for her own good. After all, they left him as the sole caregiver for his three younger sisters and his grandparents. What woman wants to step into a ready-made family like his? Still, he leaves her monthly gifts from “A Secret Admirer,” hoping she’ll know that someone loves her, even though he isn’t free to step forward.
Susanna has never gotten over losing Benaiah, and hopes he’s her secret admirer, but now the clock is ticking. Susanna’s father is remarrying in January and his wife-to-be doesn’t want to leave her Amish community and family in Iowa. So when Susanna’s daed sells his glass-blowing business to his right-hand man, Benaiah, she’s left with three options: 1) Go with Daed to his new home with a new frau and step-kinner, 2) Flush out her mysterious secret admirer, or 3) Resign herself to life as an old maid. She doesn’t want to follow Daed where his new frau is leading him. And number three isn’t happening. Marrying Benaiah is her greatest desire—but he broke her heart, and now he treats her like a pesky younger sister. Can she make him see her as a woman, one who could stand by his side as he cares for his family?
As Christmas approaches, Susanna and her friends start making gingerbread houses for select members of the community. Susanna plans for hers to go to Benaiah’s family. But while her gingerbread may find a home—will her heart?

Shelia Hall says
I have been in secret sisters at my church several times and my favorite gift was a set of crocheted dollies that she had did herself . It was a older lady who has since passed away so I treasure them as a honored memory of her.
Laura HIlton says
My mom used to have some crocheted doilies. I cherish them now.
Elsie Daly says
I have been part of a Secret Sister group. Just friends that bought each other a little something, but each didn’t know who bought what. It was fun. I also was a Secret Santa for a friend and to this day I don’t know if she knows it was me! Each Christmas for 3 or 4 years, I would place a gift on her doorstep, nicely wrapped with a card from her Secret Santa. I enjoy doing this sort of thing.
Laura HIlton says
It’s fun, isn’t it, Elsie?

Ann Austin says
I was in a new church, and in a Secret Sister group at church, she was so very kind to me. I went through a terrible ordeal, and was really floundering over something I had no control over. She gave me a lovely little rope gold bracelet, something you’d see a princess wear, because that is what we are, daughters of the King. I would never buy myself something like that, but I do know she gave it from her heart. I knew that it was regifted, something someone else had given her, that made it all the more special. I did not know it at the time, but found out later. She was a very elderly widow, not financially well off at all, but she had known my Momma as as a childhood friend, and loved me because I belonged to her ♥️. Over seventy years later, she became a friend to me too!
Maryann says
We had a secret sister at church. I never guessed mine. My favorite gift from her were some brownies she made. Her kids were older and when I dropped mine off at mother’s day out at church, they were waiting there for me. I thought it was so special because she made such an effort and did this before she went to her job.
Pamela Pavkov says

I was part of a secret sister program in our church for a couple of years. I collect bears and received one from my secret sister. We would find out at Christmas who our secret sister had been for the year and then draw another name for the next year. Thanks for this giveaway. This book sounds very interesting!
