The Best Gift I Ever Received
I’m curious: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
For me, it was a homemade meal. 🎁
My husband and I had been dating for about five months when our first Valentine’s Day as a couple rolled around (back in 2004!!!). At the time, I was following a very strict diet for which I had to weigh all the food I ate on a kitchen scale.
As a result, unless we were going out to eat at a restaurant, I did all the cooking.
That first Valentine’s Day, though, my now-husband invited me over to his apartment for a home-cooked meal. Although he survived almost exclusively on takeout, he’d gone to the grocery store and collected all the ingredients he needed to cook me a nice, diet-friendly dinner.
He’d also, being a good scientist, brought home a scale from the lab on which he could weigh out the various components of my meal.
(And wasn’t I surprised to learn that a lab scale is way more sensitive than a kitchen scale! It took forever to weigh out that dinner because the scale was so precise! 🤣)
That meal, which he cooked by himself and weighed for me on his trusty MIT lab scale, was the most romantic gift he ever gave me, because it showed me that:
- He knew me
- He accepted me
- He was willing to go out of his way to honor the things that were important to me
Forget about a grand gesture—I love writing about small moments like this that have a special significance for the hero and heroine alone.

❤️❤️❤️
When my son was little, his dad took him out shopping for a gift for me. He bought a ‘ purse like’ cigarette bag for me to carry a package of cigarettes and a lighter.. I don’t smoke and never have but I will cherish it forever because my little boy bought it for me.
Ha ha ha — kids are so funny! I’m sure he just thought it was a beautiful bag for you!
My husband has cooked me a candlelight dinner before. I was working late at my job. I come home and he had it all ready for me to sit down and eat. He is a great cook. No complaints here.
Yes!!! That’s exactly what I was going to say!!
My first mother’s Day gift was my favorite gift ever.
Aww, that first Mother’s Day is very memorable!
I love what you mentioned about your husband’s great qualities. You have truly been blessed!
A cruise trip for my twin sister and me to celebrate turning 50. It was a gift from my husband which was extremely thoughtful since her knew I was not thrilled that I was hitting the 50 mark.
How exciting, Cherie! I hope you had a wonderful time!
That’s so sweet! I have a similar story. I met my hubby when he was in college and I was finishing high school. One of our dates was to the laundromat to do his laundry. We sat and talked for a long time. Then we took all his laundry back to his apartment and he cooked dinner for me. It was such a fun and sweet date. Because he was in school and working two jobs he didn’t have a lot of time so our dates were not always a typical dinner date, but we found creative ways to spend time together.
Aww, I love that!
My husband asked me to marry him. We had a Christmas party December 12. He knelt in front of me sitting by the Christmas tree. It was so very special.
I love that! 💕
My best gift ever was my wonderful mom! She is 91, 92 in October and the best mom anyone could ask for! So loving and giving! I hope that I get to keep her for several more years! I had a great dad, too, but he’s been gone for 19 years just last week.
That’s wonderful, Bonnie! I’m glad you were blessed with a fantastic mom!
Their Unlikely Protector sounds very good.
Thank you, Tina! 😊
That hands down is the easiest question I have been asked. My daddy died suddenly in April 2014. Since my mom had dementia all cards were then signed by my dad. My birthday is March 30. So the last bday card with his signature. Holiday’s rolled around and hard as they were one day I could not find my card. My daughter took it, coppied it and sent the signature off and had it engraved on a band. When I opened that gift whew! I still get teary eyes. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
Wow, what a thoughtful gift from your daughter!🥰
My husband took some old jewelry and had them made into a flower shaped ring for me.
How beautiful! 🌺🌻🌷
How sweet of your husband(your boyfriend at the time) best gift ever has been a cross pendant with my daughters, my sons and my 3 grandchildren birthstones on it, I love it!
That sounds like a beautiful and meaningful gift 💕
The best gift that my husband got for me was a new engagement ring after mine was stolen. I always took it off on Mondays and put it back on Fridays, because I had a very physical job and didn’t want to loose the diamonds. Then I had a dead battery and he charged it and took it to get a new put in, and that Friday, I noticed it was gone. I was so heartbroken.
I’m so sorry you lost your original ring! I’m glad your husband got you a new one! 💖
The best gift my husband gave me was his unconditional love and never ending support.
The 6th time I saw him was our wedding day and we were married 35 fabulous years before he went to Heaven. My last gift from him was a small pink teddy bear on Valentines Day and it sits on my bedside table 💞💞
It sounds like he was a lovely man. I’m sorry for your loss 💔
My husband gave me a Little Free Library for Christmas one year.
What a fabulous gift!
The most special gift I got was from my parents. They replaced a very special pearl necklace that disappeared (from my teen years). I was in my 30’s when I got the necklace. Needless to say I was brought to tears
What a wonderful gift, Lisa!
That’s totally sweet of your husband. 🥰
Best gift ever from my husband has been my first four Harry Potter books that he gave me for Christmas in 2001 when we were just boyfriend/girlfriend. 🤭
And then all the other Harry Potter stuff that came later on. 😂
Aww, he knows what you like! That’s awesome!
It was a picture that my son drew at the age of 12 years old.
It was of Dorthy in the Wizard of Oz. Total surprise!
How cute! I love homemade gifts from my kids!
Over 54+ years I have received many wonderful gifts from my husband. For our first Christmas, he asked for ideas of some things to get for me. When I wrote the list of several items, I thought he’d pick 2 or 3 from the list like my parents did. No. Not him. I was so shocked when I realized he got everything on my list🤔😍 I said he shouldn’t have. He did though and still goes above and beyond❤️🥰He’s a keeper 😆💕
That’s adorable, Karen! What a nice guy! 💕
My husband gave me a poem on our first anniversary that he wrote!
That’s very sweet, Heidi! Do you still have it?
How sweet! The best gift I ever received was a queen-size quilt top my grandmother made for my parents. She died before she could make the quilt so my mom had the quilt top in their basement. I had it quilted on a long arm machine. One day I’ll get a border put on it. Thanks for the chance to win a prize.
That’s lovely, Vickie! My husband’s grandmother was a quilter, too! We got a piece of one of her quilts framed and still have it in our bedroom 🙂
The best gift I ever received was my daughters. A gift from GOD!
Children are a great blessing! 💕
A warm coat, since I do not like being cold!
Very thoughtful!
A white fox coat my late husband bought me.
Sounds like a thoughtful gift!
thoughtful man! My best /most memorable gift was a handwritten poem that my daughter wrote for my birthday then framed with the rose petals from roses she got me for Mother’s Day
How sweet! I’m sure that has pride of place somewhere prominent in your home!
My best gift was a diamond necklace my husband surprised me with for no special occasion. He was always doing so many things to help me around the house and we had 50 wonderful years together before he passed away 3 years ago.
What a wonderful surprise! I’m so sorry for your loss, Linda 💔
I have many sentimental treasures equally special to me but I’ll say these keepsake boxes that my daughters made me when they were little.
I love the handmade gifts I’ve gotten from my kids, too!
The best gift I received was my children. They have brought me so much joy and happiness.
Children are a huge gift! Life would definitely not be the same without them!
That’s a hard question for me, especially since I like homemade, personal thought out gifts.
But maybe just my family.
“Having a place to go is home; having someone to love is family; having both is a blessing.” 💕
The best gift I ever received was from one of my first grade students. It was my first puppy. My puppy was a result of the accidental meeting of their dogs. The little boy decided that I should have one of the puppies. So for Valentine’s Day, he gave me a gift of his favorite one from all his dog’s puppies. He invited me to his home and showed me all the puppies, then picked one up and said this is my favorite and it’s for you, “Happy Valentine’s Day.” This little little boy and his wonderful generous heart gave me the most PRECIOUS gift ever.
Wow — what a sweet little boy! Giving you his FAVORITE!!!
My best gifts are my children.
Children are a great blessing. 💕
That’s a difficult question, as I’ve received a lot of great gifts. One year for Christmas, my parents got me a Sweet 16 Barbie, and my sister Lenora made her 10 outfits and wrapped them all seperately.
Opening gifts is such a delight for children — I’m glad your sister thought to wrap all the outfits separately!
Wow. I’m enjoying all the comments. My husband bought me a laptop back before I was published. It was the best gift ever because it showed me he believed in my writing.
That’s a fabulous gift, Shannon! Having a supportive spouse is the best!
One of my favorite gifts that I have received was the cruise trip that my hubby treated my twin sister and me for our 5oth birthday. It made turning 50 less painful for both of us.
What a fabulous 50th birthday present! Good work on your husband’s part!!! 🙂
The year my father in law was diagnosed with brain cancer he gave me a black Pearl ring for Christmas told things may look dark now but years from know when we look back we will hopefully see beauty
What a meaningful gift. I hope you are both doing well now! 🙏
Hi Meghann,
My father in law passed away, my husband was the one that gave me the ring, unfortunately I lost the pearl several years ago. I hope you are doing well
I’m sorry for your loss. Your husband sounds like a thoughtful man!
We can’t beat the gift of salvation, but on a more earthly level I like to think my gift to my husband one Father’s Day, when I gave him a son. His best gift to me on a mundane level was an amber, celery and ivory jade pendant on a gold chain. He usually just grabbed anything last minute, but that year he wanted something to compliment my skin tone. I had just had my “colors” done.
That was a sweet gift, Bonnie! It’s nice when someone really puts thought into a gift ❤️
