For our thirtieth anniversary my husband took me on a romantic trip to Ireland. I have a grandparent that was born in Ireland and great-grandparents that were born there as well. For me this was a special treat to see the place of my ancestors. We were gone for nearly three weeks, exploring the west, south and east sides of the island. While we there we went to Ashford Castle, an 800-year-old, stone castle that once was the home of the Guinness family, located in Galway County on the west side of the island. The estate, turned 5 star resort, sits on 350 acres of woodlands, gardens and borders Lake Corrib. We explored the grounds and the public areas of the castle, discovering interesting doors and battlements, beautiful landscaping, and stunning views of the lake.
On the grounds is a falconry where we had the unique experience of going on a Hawk Walk. This consisted of an hour guided tour with an instructor who led us through the woods while we each had a beautiful Harris Hawk that would swoop down and land on our gloved hand, then take off to fly through the trees. Before we arrived, my husband was skeptical about doing this, but he was a good sport and it turned out to be one of his most favorite experiences. We even saw baby hawks and a beautiful owl. It was an amazing time.
And I also arranged for us to have afternoon tea in the Connaught Room, a beautifully appointed room overlooking the lake. We were seated by the window. The tea service was so pretty and the wait staff were in uniform. I felt like I’d stepped into an episode of Downton Abbey. There was a wide selection of specialty teas, savory sandwiches, home-made jams and tasty pastries, more than we could eat in one sitting.
During tea my husband astonished me by re-proposing. He had a ring and even went onto one knee. I was so stunned. Everyone clapped. It was such a lovely and romantic anniversary surprise worthy of any romance novel.
