Valerie Comer – Character Interview – Part 1 of 1

Shannon here: Contemporary Romance author, Valerie Comer shares insight into her characters’ romance from her novella, Sow in Love which is included in the Romance Grows in Arcadia Valley collection. The character is Joanna Kraus, the heroine of Sow in Love, my novella in Romance Grows in Arcadia Valley:
Hi, I’m Joanna Kraus. What can I do for you today? Oh, you have some questions for me? I do have ten minutes before my next client arrives so, if you make it quick, I can fit you in.

• Are you open to your own romance?

Um, you didn’t tell me the questions were going to be this sort! I’d have to say, ‘no,’ I’m not. I made a very poor choice with the last man I dated. Pierce used my real estate consultation business to manipulate his father’s company then left me high and dry when he’d gotten what he wanted from his father. It is going to take me a very long time to get over the betrayal and trust my judgment again.

• What’s the number one quality you’d require in a mate?

He needs to genuinely love God. Honestly, right now I’m not sure how to tell if it’s real or fake. Pierce said all the right words, but I guess I wasn’t looking deep enough.

• Where is the best place you can think of to find a mate?

Keeping in mind that I’m not looking for anyone, right? I once would have said in the church, but Pierce Bennet was a church-goer. I guess that’s as deep as his religion went. Now, I’m not sure where I’d look. Probably nowhere.

• What type of character traits are you attracted to?

The wrong ones, apparently. I’ve owned my own business for five or six years now, and I’m more interested in men that have a reasonably successful career of their own and are self-confident. But see where that got me.

• What type of features are you attracted to?

Blue eyes. Dark hair. ‘Nuff said. Maybe I’ll look for a brown-eyed blond next. Do you think they might be more trustworthy?

• What would be a reason to end a potential romance for you?

Oh, wow, let me think for two seconds or less. If the guy turned out to remind me of Pierce in any way, I’d be gone. There’s a fine line between self-confident and narcissistic. And I’ve learned that some career-minded men can’t think of anything but getting ahead, so that’s a huge warning sign.

• What would be the best gift a potential mate could buy for you?

Sorry I’ve been so down during this interview. I’m not usually so negative, but your questions pushed my buttons at a time when I’m reeling from a bad situation. I’m not sure if trust can be bought, but that’s what a potential mate needs to offer me, in some way or another. It won’t be found wrapped up in a pretty package — though I’m a sucker for flowers — but will come from someplace deep within. Does this man exist? Maybe, but I don’t think I’m ready to meet him yet.
