 The Story Behind Faith Departed

Infertility is one of those things that sneaks up and bites you from behind. I don’t think anyone expects it—certainly no one looks forward to it. And yet, so many people experience it. But even with as prevalent as it is, it also seems to be something that you’re not supposed to talk about (assuming you want to.) I’ll be honest, when my husband and I were going through various treatments to try and start a family, it was some of the hardest years of our marriage. But walking through those trials together brought us closer—and helped us rediscover romance.

In many ways, though, I think we’re in the minority. We’ve watched as other couples we know have walked that path, and seen the damage it’s done to their marriages. Even though they’ve stayed together, all that stress takes a toll—and it seems to primarily affect the romance. Sure, as you’ve been married a long time, your relationship is going to change, but some element of romance should remain. When you deal with infertility though, the physical aspect of your romantic relationship becomes so monitored and all-consuming, it can often start to feel like a chore. And when that happens, everything in your relationship starts to suffer.

We found that we had to start being purposeful about the romance in our marriage. Little things like leaving notes for one another in our day planners or turning off the TV in the evening and instead playing a board game or doing a puzzle together. Little things that help keep your connection fresh and remind you why you fell in love in the first place.

Ultimately, our struggles with infertility turned into my recent release, Faith Departed. While the book isn’t technically a romance (makes sense, since the main characters are already married), the book deals with the loss—or at least lessening—of romance within marriage, and how important—and worthwhile—it is to work to get it back.
