Memorable by a Hair
This year when our anniversary rolled around, my husband, Rick, said, “I’ve always wanted to go to the ultra-fancy restaurant here.”
Soon afterward, we went. We entered a dimly lit reception area with oriental rugs and mahogany wood, where a hostess welcomed us. Then she sat us at a table with a white linen cloth.
The server arrived promptly, wearing black pants and a crisp, white shirt. “Hi, I’m James. Are you just visiting, or are you celebrating a special occasion?”
“Our anniversary,” Rick replied.
“We’ll do all we can to make your anniversary memorable.” James handed us menus, then left. When he returned, he brought a small loaf of bread in a silver basket and lit a candle on our table. Afterwards, he took our orders and left.
Rick sliced off two pieces of bread. When I bit into mine, I felt something in my mouth that wasn’t bread and discretely placed the bite in my napkin before I held up the loaf and scrutinized it. “There’s a hair in the bread.”
Skeptical, Rick said, “Are you sure? Here. Let me see.”
I pointed to the hair sticking out of it, then handed it to him. He pulled on the hair, and pulled, and pulled.
“Stop. Don’t take it all out. We need to show it to the server.”
James’s eyes got as big as our bread plates. “I’ll take this away.” He gave us a sheepish look. “Would you like more bread?”
“Oh sure,” I said.
He left and we laughed. We’ve been married a long time and sometimes think alike.
I said, “Here we are in this fancy restaurant, fixing to eat this expensive food, and there’s a hair in our bread.”
We laughed some more.
Then James brought our meal. It was delicious.
When we finished eating, James asked, “Which of the cheesecakes would you like?”
We looked at each other.
“It’s our treat.”
James brought two enormous pieces of cheesecake and sent us home with a whole cheesecake.
Memorable, for sure. Where else could we have dined in a more romantic setting, gotten a delicious meal, gracious service, and one-of-a-kind bread? Not to mention the supply of cheesecake.
Ruthie and Moose, the heroine and hero in Dangerous Detour, dined in stark contrast to mine and Rick’s anniversary dinner. They ate in a cold, icy wilderness on the run from a killer.

About the book – Dangerous Detour (Discipleship Series Book 2):
Four people face a winter storm in the wilderness. Two have lost their way. One has lost his purpose and one has lost his soul.
Headed home for Christmas vacation, Ruthie, a quiet professor, crosses paths with Moose, a football coach, on an icy blocked road in Western North Carolina. Amid a winter storm, they unknowingly take shelter in a killer’s hideout. Escaping under fire, they flee into a frozen, snow-covered forest. Trying to find their way out and shake the murderer, they dodge bullets each day until the temperature drops and the world turns quiet. Then, they set up camps to survive in the wilderness. Even though they grow attracted to each other, neither admits it until each of them suffers a frightening injury. Finally, they head to a house Ruthie sees in the distance. Will they meet a new friend, or a foe?

Come back July 24th for Ronda Wells!

For our anniversary a few years ago, we went to Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. The server had little cleaning tools that looked like a comb and a straight razor . Between every course, she scraped every crumb we made away. It was like watching a magic trick. And the food was delicious. We felt like royalty
my most memorable romantic dinner was one anniversary , my husband grilled us some steaks and potatoes and we ate by candlelight because it was coming a storm and we lost power
I have a winner! Melanie B. won this drawing. I appreciate Gail for being my guest and everyone else for stopping by.
