The Most Romantic Thing
It was 2003. A tough season for me. My sister who is my very best friend, my brother-in-law, and two nephews were heading to Kenya as missionaries. I had just had my second son in September. My sister was due to leave in November. My heart was breaking.
November came, we said our good-byes, and I was not looking forward to celebrating Christmas without them. My brother-in-law and I had a love for The Far Side comics. We would sit and laugh at the cartoons together. For hours, we would just crack up. My sister would walk by us, shake her head, which made the moment even better.
Christmas came, and though I wasn’t looking forward to it, I put on a happy face, allowed God’s Spirit to move with the awe and wonder of the birth of His Son. It was a special year. It was the first Christmas in years where it actually rained in Southern California. That was God’s special gift to me that year.
My husband also showered me with gifts. A picture of Jesus laughing, a book or two. And then the most special gift he could have gotten me that just made me cry. My wonderful guy bought me the collection of Far Side comics. I had tears streaming down my face. Normally, I wouldn’t consider that the most romantic thing he could have gotten me. But he knew how sad I was my sister and her family were not with us. He couldn’t give me the gift of their presence, but he gave me the gift of laughter. It was wonderful, unexpected, and the best gift that year!
