Sour Cream Cut-Out Cookies With Cream Cheese Icing
Ingredients:
1 cup butter (no substitutions)
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup sour cream (at room temperature)
5 cups flour
For the icing:
1/2 cup butter (no substitutions)
8 ounces cream cheese (at room temperature)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 lb powdered sugar
milk, to thin if needed
For Cookies:
Mix butter, sugar, egg yolks, vanilla, and sour cream together. Add dry ingredients to mixture. Wrap in wax paper and refrigerate overnight. Roll out on a lightly floured surface or pastry cloth. Cut into 1/8th to 1/4th inch thickness using your favorite cookie cutters. Bake at 350°F for approximately 10 minutes or until the bottom is lightly browned. May need more time if on the thicker side. Cool on wire rack. Store in airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to apply icing.
For icing:
Cream butter, cream cheese, and vanilla together. Gradually add powder sugar until blended. Thin with milk to desired consistency. If adding coloring paste, you may not need milk to thin.
After icing cookies, lay flat in the fridge until set. Then store in a airtight container with a small square of wax paper between cookies. Store in fridge until ready to serve. Serves: 22.

About the book – The Snow Globe:
Victor Petersheim has left the Amish and works on a river boat on the Mississippi River, spending three months on the river then having three months off. During his off-work months he returns home to his Amish community and helps out on his grandparents’ farm. When he returns home after his most recent absence, he discovers his grossmammi has developed health problems and they’ve hired Esther Beachy to be a “mother’s helper.”
Victor is unsettled by this woman living in their home, but has to accept it. Esther loves listening to Victor’s grandmother’s stories and while puttering around in a store while the grossmammi’s in the hospital, she discovers a snow globe that depicts an area where the Petersheims used to live. She buys it as a gift for the grossmammi to cheer her up during her hospitalization. Victor is touched by Esther’s gift and her care for his grossmammi, and strives to be friendlier. Will Esther’s gentle heart draw him back to the community? Or will he return to the river once again?

I used to bake. Never did master a cookie though. Now that we are gluten-free it’s a little more complicated. But banana bread is now a favorite 🙂 Sugar cookies for Christmas were always a favorite with my family…

I love baking cookies. When my niece was little she knew when my day off was and would call me and ask to come bake cookies. I had a special box of cookie cutters that we used. Years later for her wedding shower, I gave her some very nice cookie sheets, a lovely mixing bowl and utensils, a handmade apron, and a box with the extra special cookie cutters from her childhood. Made us both cry. She now uses the cookie cutters with her own three. lichildren.

I love to bake, especially at Christmas. It is fun to try new recipes and also make some of the old standard ones. These look especially good!

I love to bake. In fact, today I baked a Sour Cream Pumpkin BUNDT Cake that is very good. I got the recipe from the Penzey’s Catalog. They are a company that sells spices and herbs. I am going to try this recipe too.

I love to bake! I hate cooking, I do it because I have too. Put an apron on me and let me go after the baking. Cakes, cupcakes, pies, breads, crisps, muffins, biscuits and cookies! At Christmas years ago I would make so many different kinds of cookies to give to family and friends. Cut-Out Cookies made with cake flour is my favorite. As getting older and disabled the last 10 years I don’t bake like that anymore. I wish I had a KitchenAid Stand Mixer to help me, my hands and wrists just don’t work like they should. These cookies sound and look delicious, so I’m going to have to make them. Grandkids will be happy to help me eat them, lol!
I’m new to Laura Hilton’s books so I hope I win this book “The Snow Globe”, I’d love to read it! Thanks!

Yes I bake! Why do I bake? I love making new recipes and trying them out on my Adult Sunday school class. If they like what I bring in, it’s a hit! Also, I usually have only a few goodies left to bring home and not a while pan or plate full!
Thanks for sharing your recipe with us. The cookies look yummy!

I love to bake but pies are my specialities. I used to demonstrate pie making for an electrical company here in rural Arizona. Loved those cherry pies.
Your recipe sounds tasty.
Deb Ragno says
I love to bake. Unfortunately, I also love to eat what I bake. Baking my goodies and following Weight Watchers is not a good combination, so I seldom bake any more.
Beth C says
I have always loved to bake since I was a young girl. Cakes and cookies always turn out great for me. However, pies never turn out like I want them too!
Melanie Backus says
I bake when necessary. If I have sweets in the house I can’t stay out of them so I don’t bake just because.
Janet B. says
I enjoy baking christmas cut out cookies with my grandchildren. The kitchen smells so good & the most fun about it is we’re making memories together that I hope will keep them warm & happy all of their lives. We watch movies while we bake.

I don’t like to cook or bake. I wish I did. But it just frustrates me. Even when I have plenty of time, it’s just not my thing.
