Love and Chocolate: An Interview with Ilsa Krause by Linda Shenton Matchett:
Ilsa Krause works at Beck’s Chocolate Factory, and we took a few minutes together while she was on break to chat about romance and of course, chocolate…
- What’s the number one quality you’d require in a mate?
That’s a great question. I’m a modern woman, progressive you might say, and even though women don’t have the right to vote yet, we deserve to be treated as intelligent individuals, capable of doing any number of things including some tasks formerly only performed by men. Any potential mate must be willing to see me as his intellectual equal. Looks aren’t important to me, although it would be nice if he had all his teeth and wasn’t squint-eyed, but I want a man who will converse with me on any number of topics and consider my point of view.
- What’s the most romantic thing Ernst ever did for you, Ilsa?
You might think I’d say the most romantic thing Ernst did was bring me flowers or take me to a candlelight dinner. But one night when we were working on a special project for Mr. Beck, we took a break, ate a simple dinner, and talked. Just like we used to before Ernst went to college and broke up with me. We discussed current events, operations at the factory, and even business strategies. I never felt more alive or cherished.
- Do you and Ernst have a favorite romantic restaurant?
There’s a lovely restaurant in town that has delicious food with china, silver, and all the fixings, but the most romantic meals are the picnics we pack and take to the lake. Overlooking the sparkling water with puffy white clouds overhead and birds singing in the trees is our favorite way to have a romantic meal. Selfishly, I must prefer when he volunteers to bring the basket because his mother is a much better cook than I’ll ever be (blushes).
- What’s your favorite song?
(claps hands and smiles) “By the Light of the Silvery Moon” is our absolute favorite song. It’s a little old – published in 1909, but we love it. Did you know the song was first performed on stage by Lillian Lorraine at that year’s Ziegfield Follies. Thanks to Mr. Ziegfield, the song became a big hit. Have a listen: By the Light of the Silvery Moon
- How soon after meeting Ernst did you know he was the one? Honestly?
Sooner than I’d like to admit. You know we met in high school and walked out together for a while, but it wasn’t until we saw each other at Mr. Beck’s factory that I realized how mature, clever, and handsome he really was.
- Who is most romantic, you or Ernst?
Definitely Ernst. I wish I could say I was, but I’m the pragmatic one of the two of us. Sometimes I think he never gets his head out of the clouds, but Mr. Beck says he’s smart as a whip, so maybe he just gets addlepated when I’m around. 🙂
- Where would you like to go on your honeymoon?
The Beaumont Hotel in Green Bay. Have you ever seen it? Gorgeous! Five stories tall right on Main Street and not far from the river. A perfect location. It was founded by Mr. Israel Beaumont whose father was a well-known surgeon. His house is one of the oldest structures in Green Bay. Quite lovely, but I digress. I’d love to be able to afford to stay at the Beaumont, but don’t tell Ernst. I’m not sure he can afford something so fine.
- Last, but not least, what is your favorite chocolate?
Anything, Mr. Beck makes, of course!
Question for Readers: Which is your favorite type of chocolate: Dark, Milk, or White Chocolate?

She just needs a job. He wants a career. Is there room in their hearts for love?
Ilsa Krause and her siblings are stunned to discover their father left massive debt behind upon his death. To help pay off their creditors and save the farm, she takes a job at Beck’s Chocolates, the company her father despised and refused to supply with milk.
