Shannon here: L. A. Ramsey shares insight into her real life romance and her characters romance from her contemporary romance, Sunny Beam. Comment on this post to enter the drawing. Three winners will receive an e-book copy. Deadline: May 10th, 11:59 pm central time. Here’s L. A.:
- What’s the most romantic thing your spouse has ever done for you?
When we first met, he cooked supper for me. We hadn’t even kissed yet and he made a romantic supper of chicken and baked potatoes. He put on romantic classical music. Afterward we watched Aladdin and kissed at the very moment that Aladdin kissed Jasmine.
- Do you and your spouse have a favorite song?
Our “song” is “A Whole New World” – which seems fitting since that’s the movie when he kissed me the first time.
- What’s the most romantic present your spouse ever bought for you?
Back in summer of 2007, I had a rough time with the death of my father and my mother was very ill. He spent an entire month’s paycheck and bought a tennis bracelet, with real gold and diamonds. He couldn’t wait for my birthday to arrive in September and gave it to me that summer.
- How soon after meeting your spouse did you know he was the one?
Immediately! I had prayed for God to tell me very clearly when I met the man I was to marry. We met while camping on October 22, 1993 and the second we were introduced I heard a voice very clearly say “He is the one you are to marry,” in my head. I knew it was God. He proposed 2 months after we met and we married 4 months after that. We just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary, so we are proof that “Love at first sight” is real.
- What is the most caring thing your spouse has ever done for you?
This may sound gross, but you know someone loves you and cares for you if they take care of you when you are at your very worse. I had a horrible stomach bug, so bad that I couldn’t hold my head up, and I was sick at both ends at the same time. (Told you it was gross.) But he sat there with me and held my head and held the bucket and carried me back to bed once I was done. That’s true caring!
- What’s the most romantic thing your hero ever did for your heroine?
He proposed to her catching her totally off guard. Everyone in her life knew he planned this big proposal and even flew to the other side of the world to receive her parents’ blessings and purchase the ring. It was his Christmas gift to her.
- How soon after meeting the hero did the heroine know he was the one?
It took her about 4 months and she had a dream that she admitted to him she loved him.
- What is the most caring thing your hero has ever done for your heroine?
He stuck with her as she ministered in some very tough situations. While she struggled in the spirit to pray he kept his hands on her, praying over her to be filled with the Holy Spirit and to minister to the sick child.
- Who said, “I love you” first, your hero or your heroine?
He told her he loved her the night he proposed to her.
- If you hero and heroine end up married, where will they go on their honeymoon?
The US Virgin Islands.
Excerpt from Sunny Beam:
Sunny’s misty eyes closed and she raised her hands in worship. She felt someone come to her side, and she dropped her arms and turned. Rehan grabbed her hand and held onto it tightly. His eyes stared deeply into hers, a wistful, yearning, serious, intense stare, as if he were about to cry. His eyes locked on hers, not letting them go.
Everyone else faded away and it was just her and Rehan standing on the great porch, under the cold winter winds and beautiful twinkling lights, which reflected in his dark brown eyes and danced off his dark hair. His eyes held her like a magnet. If it were not for the 300 people standing around, she would have flung herself into his arms and kissed him. She had to restrain herself; he acted as if he were holding back too. His hand gripped hers tightly, as if he never wanted to let go.
There was a magical transformation in Sunny’s attitude and emotions. She was overcome with her full heart and the love she felt. The tears flowed freely as the beautiful songs continued. No one but Rehan noticed, though. He kept gazing at her, unable to take his eyes off her for long. She gazed back at him, through her tears; only then did he release her hand, put his arm around her, and hug her tightly to him. She instinctively wrapped her arms around him and hugged him, hanging on.

This gift uproots her from all with which she is familiar when she is compelled to use it. Faced with a decision of two distinctively different paths in life she anguishes over her choices, enticed by the dark stranger who just happens to appear at the perfect time right on her doorstep. Her parents think she should stay home and embrace her opportunities. Her heart tells her otherwise.
Sunny’s very good friends take her on a sabbatical where she can relax and think about the direction of her life. A vivid dream she has gives her some insight and the dream has more meaning than she ever fathoms.
Will Sunny go the way of fame and fortune, using her gift to minister to the masses in her homeland? Will she follow the dark stranger to the other side of the world to use her gift in a place and culture unknown to her? Sunny finds herself falling for the dark stranger who seems to be on a path to becoming a monk, leaving her for a life of celibacy.
