“Watch out! You might get your MRS degree!”
This warning was said in jest by a couple standing in front of my parents and me at iHop during the week of freshman orientation at Biola University.
Truthfully, I’d dreamed of finding my husband, but I was in no rush. I loved school and studying and wanted to concentrate on learning and living life away from the comforts of home.
But God had other plans.
The RA (resident assistant) on my floor pointed out who she had her eye on to all of us freshman girls on the floor. He was tall, blonde, a surfer, and also an RA. But when we met him in person in front of the cafeteria, I noticed his eyes found mine the most.
Now I’m not the kind of girl to steal someone else’s guy, so I chalked it up to my imagination. But when he walked me and a friend to our dorm one evening, he slyly asked my friend to see if our RA was available to chat, and when she slipped through the double doors to our dorm, he asked me out on a date—to church and pizza on Sunday!
Sounded fun! So I said the first thing that came to mind. “Yes!”
Oh, no! What have I done? I had two days to think about what I would say to my RA.
At 11:45 p.m. the night before the date, I knocked on my RA’s door. She could see I was visibly upset. I didn’t want to start my college life having a target on my back. I wanted friends, not enemies.
That’s when I noticed a tiny picture frame with two cutout hearts with my RA’s picture beside his. Ugh! I couldn’t go on the date. “I would rather have your friendship than go out with a guy that I didn’t know,” I said.
But my RA was gracious.
And kind.
And told me to go.
The next day, a friend on the floor found out about the date and didn’t agree. But it wasn’t up to her. And my RA put out that fire before it had a chance to spread. What a relief!
My husband and my first date was September 9, 1984. We dated all throughout college and married four years later on July 9, 1988. We just celebrated our thirty-sixth anniversary.
I’m so glad I said yes! 🙂

Hi Cherie,
I know Sherry wishes she could type and chat with you. I went to cosmetology school and was a hairdresser for ten years. My current hairdresser is a friend from cosmetology school. It’s always fun catching up with her when I get a hair cut.
