Interview with Allison Hart – heroine of Dandelions for Dinner by Valerie Comer:
- Are you open to your own romance?
There is no such thing as romance, because guys are all just in a relationship for what they can get out of it, and then they move on to someone else. You can’t even imagine how ticked off I was when I found out the novel being written about me was a romance. Seriously?
- What’s the number one quality you’d require in a mate?
This supposes I’d want a mate, and I don’t. But he’d have to be faithful to me. See what I mean? That’s just never going to happen. Guys simply aren’t capable.
What’s the number two quality you’d require in a mate?
Fine, I’ll play along with your game. If I ever marry, it will need to be to a man who loves and follows Jesus. You probably think that would make him be the faithful kind of guy, but in my experience, that’s not automatically true.
- What type of character traits are you attracted to?
Um, I already mentioned the faithfulness part, right? But also, I’ve received custody of my four-year-old nephew. Trust me, you don’t want to know about my sister and her string of boyfriends and the mess they made of this kid. I’m determined to give him a safe place, so any hypothetical man I married would need to love Finnley like his own.
I can see what you’re thinking already. If I’m convinced every male on the planet is a loser, why would I even bother with this little boy? It’s not like my love could make him turn out differently. It’s a conundrum, and one God is talking to me about.
- What would be a reason to end a potential romance for you?
One hint of infidelity. One hint of pushing me into something I wasn’t ready for. One hint of being some man’s conquest.
- What would be the best gift a potential mate could buy for you?
I’ve always wanted a big guard dog. Maybe a Doberman or a German Shepherd. So a puppy would make a great gift, I think.
On second thought…this may sound strange, but it’s like God is my guard dog. My life hasn’t ever been safe, but—like I mentioned earlier—God is working in me. He tells me I am secure in His care. I’m trying to learn to relax and trust Him about this, but it’s really hard.
About Valerie: Valerie Comer’s life on a small farm in western Canada provides the seed for stories of contemporary inspirational romance. Like many of her characters, Valerie and her family grow much of their own food and are active in the local foods movement as well as their creation-care-centric church. She only hopes her creations enjoy their happily ever afters as much as she does hers, shared with her husband, adult kids, and adorable granddaughters.
Valerie writes Farm Lit where food meets faith, injecting experience laced with humor into her award-winning Farm Fresh Romance stories.
About the book – Dandelions for Dinner:
She hates him. He loves her not.
Men are weeds. Allison Hart doesn’t need them in her carefully tended life, though her friends at Green Acres seem happy with their guys. Why can’t Allison open her heart to anyone but her young nephew? Then again, he’ll be a man one day, too. If only the irritating contractor in charge of building her home and farm school wasn’t the boy’s favorite person.
Fireworks with Brent Callahan’s newest client shift from antagonism to the rocky possibility of a relationship. When he comes face to face with a history he’d much rather forget, he realizes hiding his failures isn’t the best option for finding forgiveness, let alone love.
Can a little boy help weed out the past before it chokes their future together?

Question: Are you a dog or cat person, or both?
Molly Noble Bull says
I am a dog person, period. Cats don’t like me very much. But I sure did like this character interview and would love a free copy of the book.

Thank you for a great character interview! I am definitely a dog person. In fact, in my 59 years, I have never been without a dog!

Valerie Comer says
My hubby is definitely a dog person, where I’m more of a cat person. We’ve usually had both! Thanks for your interest, Molly and Melanie.
Shannon Taylor Vannatter says
I’m both. I had a poodle when I was growing up. A few years later, we took in a stray cat. He was a tom and didn’t last long. But about a year later, we got a stray female. After I married, we had weenie dogs for several years. After all three struggled with back problems, I didn’t want any more. My son has a chocolate lab now, but I love her as much as he does. I also have two charcoal gray cats.
Janet Estridge says
I am highly allergic to both cats and dogs. If I weren’t, I would be a cat person.
