HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS ENGAGEMENT By Vickie McDonough
If you’ve never seen the Christmas lights at Rhema Bible College in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, you’re missing something spectacular. Every tree, building, fence is covered in millions of colored lights. It’s an enchanting wonderland that takes my breath away every time I see it. A tiny part of our family’s history is entwined with Rhema, and I’d like to tell you about it.
My son dated his girlfriend for 4 and ½ years before he got the nerve up to ask her to marry him. They had agreed to wait until Valentine’s Day before they got engaged so they could save money for the wedding. Christmas rolled around, and the weather was unseasonably warm, so Brian took Meridith to Rhema to see the Christmas lights. They strolled the sidewalks through the amazing lights that covered every thing in view and lit up the area. Engaging Christmas music played from speakers hidden in the trees. As they crossed the bridge under a canopy of lights, Brian stopped and knelt down, pretending to tie his shoe. “Hey, look, there are ducks down there,” he said.
Meridith took the bait and turned to look at them. Brian whipped out the ring and when she turned back around, he said, “Will you put me out of my misery and marry me?”
Meridith was stunned. A good stunned, and of course she said yes. She’s quite a sharp gal, so pulling off a surprise wasn’t easy. Brian and Meridith will have been married ten years this July. They got married on my parents’ 50th anniversary.
This Christmas, I plan to visit Rhema again, but when I go, I’ll be taking my little granddaughter to see the lights.

Sounds very romantic. One of my friend’s husband proposed to her by buying an ornament that opens and held her ring. He had her “find” the ornament in the Christmas tree. She was very surprised.

I love love stories! Particularly sweet ones with happy endings. My husband was born and raised in OK, but I don’t know if he’s ever seen the Rhema lights….at least not with me. LOL Christmas will always be romantic. That sounds almost like a book title. Thanks for the giveaway and I appreciate the chance to win. I hope I do!
Christmas came a little early with Vickie’s story, but we’re re-running it in December and she’s agreed to give away another book then. So glad to find another romantic guy. Sounds like Mom raised him well.
