The Perfect Time to Meet
My husband and I were born three and a half years and three states apart (four depending on which way you drove). But after we started dating, it became apparent that just perhaps we were supposed to meet.
Even though he was from Iowa and I was from Oklahoma, we both went to Harding University, a Christian college in Arkansas. For one and a half years our attendance overlapped. We never met.
He was a comedian mainly performing for friends, family and crowds he knew. Looking back, I realized I had seen him perform a comedy act in our chapel. My older sister who attended the same college knew who he was, although they weren’t friends.
Post college, we both moved to New England. We lived about an hour away from each other. He worked with computers and I was a nanny.
Another guy who had also gone to Harding attended the same church I did. During our college years, I knew this guy’s sister and he was friends with my future husband.
In 1989, seven years after our overlapping years in college and 2 years, 3 families and 2 churches after living in New England, I finally met my future spouse.
The church I attended had a decent singles group. We had regular activities. In the fall of 1989, we held a “Hawaiian Laue” party. Our mutual friend invited my not-yet-spouse to attend.
I served as the welcoming committee, greeting guests and making them feel at home. After a brief introduction and chat, my future husband joined his friend a bit of distance away from where I stood. His friend began humming the wedding march. (No, I didn’t hear it.) What a tease. But little did he know!
During the course of that first evening we had further opportunity to visit. One thing always struck me – he was easy to talk to. I liked that.
Our second encounter was at my church’s Christmas party that year. Again, we had ample opportunity to talk and by the time he left, he had my phone number and promised to call after the holidays (we were each headed back home to visit respective family).
True to his word, come January he called and asked me on a bona fide date, eight years after the first possibility of our paths crossing. If we had met earlier, would we have hit it off? I have my doubts. I believe in my heart that this was the perfect time in our lives to meet.

Still in New York, Barry fights his own demons. He knows he messed up, but is powerless to stop his rage and addictions. A fistfight on the streets of the city lands him in jail and forces him to face the possibility of a future behind bars.
Karen knows holding onto her bitterness won’t repair her marriage. But how do you forgive someone when you don’t feel like it? As she searches for the answer, she uncovers the family secret that threatens to tear them all apart. Can she find her way back to the place Where Hope Starts?
