Excerpt from Jackson’s Fall (Book 3 of the Troubles in the West series) by Carole Brown:
Two hours later, the baking shop doorbell tinkled, and Gabrielle turned to see who’d entered. And almost fainted.
Jackson Barlowe stepped inside and swept off that brown hat that perfectly matched his dark brown eyes and hair.
Gabrielle swallowed. “May I help you, Mr. Jackson?”
He grinned at her, and she felt her face flush.
“You may call me just Jackson, Gabrielle. I think we’ve known each other long enough that we don’t have to be formal.”
She nodded and stuttered. “I think you’re right, just Jackson.”
He shot her another glance, this time his lips were split into an even wider smile, his eyes filled with laughter. “That too, if you like.”
“I’m sorry—”
“I don’t mind if you don’t.”
“Yes, sir.” Gabrielle winced inside. He would think she was the most stupid woman in this town. “What may I help you with?”
“Thought I’d pick up some of those goodies you have. Maria’s been sick this week and that leaves Destiny doing all the cooking. Thought it might ease the load on her a bit.”
“That’s very kind of you, Mister—uh, Jackson.” She moved to the glass cases and pointed out the cookies.
“I’ll take a dozen of each kind and then, hmm, maybe six loaves of that bread. Fresh baked, I take it?”
“Yes, Sir! Grandmama baked them early this morning.”
“That’s just fine. I hope I can wait till I get back to the ranch before I tear into this food.”
She laughed. He was such a nice man.
He pulled out a wad of bills and tossed several of them on the counter top. “Keep the change, Miss Gabrielle. I’d like to see you in a light blue dress next time you come to visit Destiny. It sure would look nice with that hair of yours.”
He took the wrapped packages of food and headed to the door, opened it, then hesitated as if he wanted to say something else. Almost as if he was doing it on impulse, he turned back and stared at her a moment, nodded, then left, leaving Gabrielle breathless and feeling a little faint.
For sure, he was the nicest unmarried man she’d ever met.
Not that being unmarried made him eligible for her.
Not at all.

About the book – Jackson’s Fall:
He’d never fainted in his life. Hardly ever been sick. Never been afraid to tackle wild animals, untamed horses, or men with guns. But…there was his brother Jeremiah. A person so despicable he’d hoped to never see him again. And worse, facing the heartless woman, Penelope, who’d betrayed him in front of the whole town—standing here now just feet away from him with Jeremiah. Well, for the first time in his life, he wanted to run. Fast.
Yet, he couldn’t. He wouldn’t. There was his job that he loved, and all the dreams he’d planned for. But most of all, there was a new woman in town. A woman who was kind and sweet and beautiful, with a heart of gold. They were friends—good friends, and neither of them expected anything else.
But can Jackson Barlowe find peace in the good things of his life?

Yes I told him he was a very nice young man the first time I met and that I hoped I would never have to talk to him again and then married him 5 years later
