On the morning of December 7^th, 1985 I told Darci Sabin, “You’re going to do something today you’ve never done before.”
When we got to the small airfield just south of Seattle, we walked into the office of Fly Me There plane charters and introduced ourselves. I explained to Darci I had charted a four seat plane to tour around the Puget Sound area and see things from the sky.
She thought this was the thing she’d never done before. Nope. I had something better in store.
The week before I had contacted at friend of mine that was the baseball coach of a nearby high school.
“Ron, do you think I could get a hold of ten bags of the lime you use to line a baseball diamond?”
“What to you want it for?”
“I’m going out to Paul Waterman’s field. I want to write a message in twenty foot letters.”
It took me about two hours to write “DARCI WILL YOU MARRY ME?” in Paul’s pasture.
When the small Cessna took off I slipped the pilot a map on where I wanted him to take us. But either I had my topography off or he was a bit directionally challenged. When we got over Woodinville (where the field was) I kept saying, “How ‘bout if you take us over a little more to the right?”
After ten minutes of this, Darci was feeling a little sick, so when we finally got over the field and I said, “Hey, look down there, that’s Paul Waterman’s field,” she glanced down for a nano second, said, “Uh huh,” and went back to looking straight ahead and wondering why the pilot kept going in circles.
Finally I said, “Darci, look right down there,” and pointed. She looked, I pulled the ring out while her head was turned, she turned back with a surprise and joy filling her face, and said, “Yes!”
So guys, if you’re going to take your potential wife up in a plane to see your proposal written in field a thousand feet below, make sure your pilot knows the geography he’s flying over—or pick a fiancée with a strong stomach.
