- How did you meet your spouse?
I met my husband 18 years ago when I worked as an associate agent in an insurance office. He came in for an insurance quote and my co-worker helped him. I noticed he was handsome, but not one to make first moves, I ignored him. My co-worker commented that he “couldn’t keep his eyes off me.” He called, asked me out, and our first date was to church on a Wednesday night.
- How do your hero and heroine meet?
My hero and heroine were in high school together. Abby had a crush on Race forever, but he’d never really paid much attention to her other than when he borrowed a book from her. She’s shy, wears baggy clothes, and hangs with the geek crowd. Abby gets a makeover and learns to dress like the popular girls, hoping to gain his attention.
Excerpt from Hotline Girl by K Dawn Byrd:
I said goodbye and disconnected the call, watching Race and his girlfriend, Isis, as they made their way slowly across the parking lot. She reached for his hand and jealousy flowed through me. One of the football players called his name and Race turned, shooting him a cool wave before popping the locks on his Camaro. For the briefest of seconds, his eyes were fixated on me, and my insides did the stupid belly flop they always did when he was in sight.
Marge leaned toward me. “He’s looking at you.”
I’d thought maybe I was seeing things, but Marge had noticed it too. I shot him a grin, but didn’t wave just in case he hadn’t meant to lock eyes with me. What I wouldn’t give to go for a ride in that car. The chances of that happening were about as good as me winning the lottery, which was zero since I didn’t play.
Race placed Isis in the passenger seat of his car and then jogged toward the porch. My heart took flight, beating a solid tempo that seemed so loud that I wondered if anyone else could hear it. He must have forgotten something inside, but why was he looking at me?
“What’s he doing?” I whispered.
Race slowed before he reached me. He wore a light blue Sterling High School t-shirt with our mascot, a stallion, on it. His jeans were preppy and manufactured with rips in all the right places to come across as cool. “Hey, aren’t you in my trig class?”
“Yeah.” I couldn’t believe he’d actually noticed.
“Do you need your book tonight?”
“No,” I said as I pulled from his gaze and began rummaging around in my book bag. I shoved it toward him. Our fingers brushed and warmth rushed up my arm, remaining long after his hand had returned to his side.
“Thanks. I’ll get it back to you tomorrow.” He shot me another grin, his green eyes twinkling. “I guess brains like you don’t need to study.”
I tilted my chin upwards in defiance. “You should talk. I hear you’re in the running for valedictorian.”
He nodded. “Yeah, against you. Take it easy on me, will ya?”
His tone was teasing, and I warmed toward him. I was seeing a playful side of Race I’d never seen and I liked it. Was he like that with Isis?
Race held up the book and tilted it toward me. “Thanks. See you tomorrow.”
“Hurry up, will you?” screamed Isis from the car.
He turned and raced toward his Camaro, and I asked Marge, “What does he see in her anyway?”
