How hubby and I met and proposal
Every married couple has their own story of how and when they met. If my husband and I really took it all the way back to when we originally met, we would start in first grade. However, we had little to do with each other at that time, seeing as I didn’t care to catch his boy cooties and he preferred to stay clear of my girl cooties.
Middle school was a different story. We began to eye each other across the quad. Then came that fateful day of the “Will you go with me?” and my yes. But, our love was not to be because I moved to the next town and we broke up.
Two years later I returned to my hometown and high school to find my middle school beau was still around and we still had eyes for each other. We started dating in our sophomore year. When Keith got his senior class ring, I wore it proudly on my pointer finger.
We attended colleges only about an hour away from home so we met up on the weekends to see each other and wrote letters to each other during the week.
Seven years together and I was beginning to wonder if he would ever propose to me. When I asked, he would say, “I have to get my ducks in a row.” I started replying to this with, “I didn’t even know you had ducks.”
On my graduation day from college, Keith stood with my parents, grandfather, one of my college teachers, and me just outside of my parent’s conversion van. As we awaited time for the ceremony, Keith handed me a wrapped gift. I opened it to find a Precious Moments figurine of a girl and a boy. The boy knelt in front of the girl with a ring and a note marked with check yes or no. I had waited so long for his proposal but was oblivious on this day.
Keith asked, “So will you?” At my confused expression, he turned to my father and asked for my hand. Now, I was starting to get a clue.
I blurted, “Of course I’ll marry you.”
Keith reached into his pocket and pulled out a smaller box. “You could probably carry this better than the figurine during your graduation.”
I melted as he pushed the engagement ring onto my finger.
Graduation blurred in contrast. They say I did walk across the stage and get my diploma, but all I saw was that diamond on my hand.
Five months later, I married that cootie-ridden boy from first grade. This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of that wonderful day.
