Office Dreams
I love our current house. It has enough bedrooms to accommodate our big family and has a peek of the ocean from our back deck. We’ve already remodeled the kitchen and bathrooms, what more could this writer want? An office, of course!
In our previous home, we had built a separate structure in the backyard, but I had to leave it behind when we moved. It was no ordinary shed. My husband and I added electricity, insulation, drywall, wood flooring, a French door, and a skylight. The big windows faced our yard and a grove of trees. I wrote a lot in that shed and I missed it. Terribly.
So when my husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I held my breath. Did I dare ask? Was it too big? Too expensive? Instead of keeping my dream to myself, I blurted, “An office!”
This time we couldn’t add a shed to our backyard. Our HOA wouldn’t allow it. Instead, my oldest son and I figured out the best place to add a room to our home —the second-story front deck above the garage!
After plans, permits, and the work of a local contractor, my office was complete nine months later. It’s six feet deep and eighteen feet long. I have a Dutch door, pretty tile, bookshelves to house my books, and an electric fireplace on the wall for chilly winter days. My desk and cabinet face the front windows, and a soft blue chair fits snugly on the side. Two of my book covers grace my walls, and a large GRATEFUL sign hangs above the sliding glass door. It is the office of my dreams!
I truly believe it was an act of faith to build the office, and I’m grateful every day I work here. When was the last time you put your fears aside and asked God for something BIG?

About the book – Capture Me:
Two biological sisters. Two different families. Will an old photograph prompt a reunion?
When Ashley Stevens discovers a box of photos that remind her of her difficult childhood with cancer, she wants to push that box aside while keeping her promise to her adoptive grandmother to create scrapbooks from the pictures in the trunk. A photo of herself as a young child sitting beside a smaller girl continues to haunt her. Who is she and why does the toddler’s face look so much like her own? Between her job at the animal shelter, waiting on a proposal from and her boyfriend of three years, and his troubled family, will Ashley ever discover who the girl is?
There’s nothing Kayla Witherspoon wants more than to quit medical school. After two grueling years, it is time she tell her parents the truth—that she desires to be a fashion designer, not a doctor like them. Adding to her fear of imperfection, a woman claims Kayla has a biological sister. She’s gotten along fine as an only child. Why would she need a sibling now?

love to redo my spare bedroom as a library/office
Sherry says
I can picture wall-to-wall bookshelves! 🙂 That would be fun.
Sharon Dyee says
I would like to redo my writing room. Need to get rid of some extra furniture and make it more cheerful.
Sherry says
I agree, Sharon! A writing room needs to be cheerful.
Susan Campbell says
I would love to have a library for all my books
Sherry says
Hi Susan. I’ve given away a lot of my books to my church’s library because I couldn’t house them all. A library room would be fun.
Shannon Vannatter says
Hi Sherry, glad to have you here and I love your office. Like Sherry, we recently added an office on our house for me. I love it. If I added anything else, it would be a garage. But the library sounds good too. I have a bookcase in my office, but it’s almost full. I’m constantly having to give books away and only keep my favorites, so I don’t run out of room.
Sherry says
Hi Shannon. Thanks for having me on your blog. It’s amazing how many nooks and crannies we can find to add on to or change. A couple of summers ago, my husband and I enclosed the area under our back deck to create a storage shed. But a library room is every writer’s dream!
